Airbus and Boeing products running behind schedule
Samsonite replied to BigDUSA's topic in Idle Chit Chat
Well, they haven't built the tanker they offered the U.S. Air Force, yet, but there is on paper sometime called the 767AT. There has been some speculation on the aviation boards of Boeing putting a new cockpit and the GEnx engines on a 767 and offereing it to the airlines, but that is just speculation and nothing more. That extra thrust from the GEnx engines (the engines for the 787 and a smaller version for the 747-8) might give the 767 the kind of performance the 757 is know for, i.e., throws you back in your seat and climbs like rocket. The 767 is a good aircraft. A new converted 767-300BCF (Boeing Converted Freighter, a former passenger model converted to cargo use) just flew non-stop from Singapore to Seattle, a 14, plus, hour flight. Of course, it was empty. We will have to see. Who knows, something good might come from all of this. -

Sounds like you and your pilot friend may have crossed wires. He may have been talking more in the terms of the following: "....By using electrical control circuits combined with computers, designers can save weight, improve reliability, and use the computers to prevent the undesirable characteristics mentioned above. Advanced modern fly-by-wire systems are also used to control otherwise unstable fighter aircraft. The words "Fly-by-Wire" imply an electrically-signalled only control system. The term is generally used, however, in the sense of computer-configured controls. This is where, between the operator and the final control actuator or surface, a computer system is interposed. This modifies the inputs of the pilot in accordance with software programmes. These are carefully developed and validated in order to produce maximum operational effect without compromising safety." But, the article goes on to say, "Boeing and Airbus differ in their FBW philosophies. In Airbus aircraft, the computer always retains ultimate control and will not permit the pilot to fly outside the normal flight envelope. In a Boeing 777, the pilot can override the system, allowing the aircraft to be flown outside this envelope in emergencies. The pattern started by the Airbus A320 has been continued with the Airbus family and the Boeing 777." Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_flight_control_systems -

The Boeing Fly-by-Wine system does give the pilot the last say, but even when the pilot has control of the aircraft, the computers are working in the background taking care of smaller task, such as trim, etc. As to the BA 777 that crashed at LHR, the final report hasn't come in, but it looks like some sort of fuel contamination. Most airlines have the pilot take the plane up manually, but do use the computer to land the aircraft. A pilot friend of mine who flew A340s said his airline required all take offs to be done by the pilots, but the computers did 9 out of every 10 landings. -
Cherry Bar December Party Pictures

Very nice photos, but by adding pictures upon pictures to one post/topic it takes a LONG time to download the page. Couldn't we go back to a new post/topic for each party? -

Nam is still the best looking girl working at Cherry Bar. Too bad she won't go with customers. She is sitting on a gold mine. -
Improve Photo Quality Using Photoshop
Samsonite replied to som nam na's topic in Technical problems or questions.
There is Adobe Photo Shop, the granddaddy of them all, but there are many other software programs that do a excellent job. Two that come to mind are ACDSee and The GIMP. The price on The GIMP is certainly "right," it is free OpenSource software and it does a very good job. http://www.gimp.org/ -
As I said, the China Airline web site works fine. Perhaps not the best web site around, but it works. I don't see anything particularly difficult about it.
-
No, but it is Taiwan based. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Airlines
-
I've never had a problem booking a flight on the China Air web site (that is China Air out of Taiwan).
-
Yep. "China Air" is the national airline of Taiwan. "Air China" is from mainland China. The two should not be confused.

Cheap Charlie hotels in BKK?

Soi 11, I believe, or Soi 11/1. -
I've wondered about that as I've never seen anything like it in The States. :)

A 747 has a generator on each engine and all four generators were working. However, water dripped down on the control circuits cutting off distribution of the electrical power. There is a shield designed to prevent water from reaching the control circuits, but during the last heavy maintenance on this aircraft the shield was not re-installed. Some mech or quality control supervisor might lose their head over this one.

Airbus and Boeing products running behind schedule

Nonsense, as usual, CheshireCat. Money doesn't change hands until the date of delivery. Airbust is dangerously "over exposed" in the middle east and the bubble will burst eventually. It always does. -
Congratulations, WallyC! All your diligent research paid off.

I've been having similar problems today. Pages, without photos, only partially load, can't scroll down a page, and two or three times I was throw back to a page that said something to the effect that there were too many connections being made at this time...whatever. Only happening here so it is not my software or connection. Edit in: I've tried 4 different browsers in Linux and 3 in XP and the result is the same each and every time.

Cutting all ties to LOS, Mark?

I agree with most of what you have said, especially about the Lockheed Constellation, but in 1999 that Boeing 747-400 was only 9 years old. Here it is landing at LHR in June of this year. They have gotten their money out of it.

EVA has never had a fatal accident. Cathay Pacific had one, but it wasn't a fault of their equipment or personel. "15 June 1972; Cathay Pacific Convair 880; near Pleiku, South Vietnam: The aircraft was on a flight from Bangkok to Hong Kong when the aircraft crashed after a bomb detonated on board. The bombing was apparently done as part of an attempted passenger insurance fraud. All 71 passengers and 10 crew members were killed." http://www.airsafe.com/events/regions/asia.htm

sunshine residence standard v areca lodge standard
Samsonite replied to ian's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
You definitely want to stay in the Residence wing NOT the old hotel wing. A Sea View Room on the the 10th, 11th or 12th floor has a sweeping view of the bay. That and the location are what you are paying for, but it doesn't have much else to offer. Plain, worn, yellow/brown water, staff will rip you off if they think they can get away with it, but, then, what's new about that. The view is the only reason I've stayed there twice. -
The Residence Garden

Whew! That is a mouth full! You must be a lawyer by trade? BTW were did you find the map? I thought those maps disappeared when the baht bus board adopted a "different philosophy" about Pattaya? -
The Residence Garden
Samsonite replied to tobutterflyornottobutterfly's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
Jack C., You have said so far that the, "...the Residence Garden is like an army barracks..." "...RG has one of the worse locations in all Pattaya..." "...the crappiest location I know of in the area..." "..that RG has an atrocious location..." "...has one of the most miserable locations..." "...that it's got an absolutely wretched location..." and you have a assumed that, "...For most people the location really sucks..." So, we have, "worse, crappiest, atrocious, miserable, wretched," and, finally, "sucks" I don't know you and in the past you have always seemed to be a rational, likeable guy, but when I see such a barrage of negative adjectives use to to describe some as simple as a hotel location the alarm bells go off and I have to wonder if you don't have a personal reason for repeatedly slamming The Residence Garden? I'm not crazy about the location myself, but I do think it is the best bang for the buck I've seen in a hotel in Pattaya to date. Put it on the corner of Beach Road and Soi 13 and it would be perfect. -
