On the way back, I check in early, but everyone tells me I'm too early, so, say for a 2.30 am flight from bkk to Amsterdam, I would book taxi for 8 pm from Pattaya to airport. I reckon on 1 1/2 to 2 hrs to airport, at that time of night, leaving me 1 hr plus until check in opens. You prob think I'm over cautious but its always a wrench whatever time you leave and especially when the bars are just getting into full swing!

Death of a Shopping Mall: A Rant
benny27 replied to MeGoDanceNow's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Its a great pity its doing so badly. I for one thought the Villa Supermarket was well worth a trip, good prices and and excellent 'fast food' style thai restaurant, bought a few t shirts at the sports shops there too. The shopping road that is Pattayaland? linking beach and 2nd road seems to be doing OK, can't see why though. -
Simon Cowell in Pattaya in the 80s
benny27 replied to benny27's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Yes, sorry about that, it must have been in the early 90s. -
I am sure I met Simon Cowell in Pattaya, in the bars on beach road, he was on a huge Harley, chatted to him about the music industry altho' I'm not in it myself, he was working as a promotion man then I think. Never ever watch him on TV but somthing jogged my memory when I got round to seeing him on TV last night. I am sure it was him, I've been over to Pattaya at least 30 times over the last 25 years, and it was prob in early 90s. All the bars in those days were on beach road, long before Royal Plaza and all those market shops were even dreamt of, and he used to hang around those. I remem

Saw him coming out of Star Hotel on soi 11, strange that he kept his bike there but I don't think he lives there. I've also seen him near the Alcazar, he's very shy and I don't know what nationality he is, but he puts a bit of humour and colour into the Pattaya scene so for me, that's OK.

For UK readers: A few years ago, Asian Babes magazine proposed chartering a jet from UK to Bangkok, had topless air hostesses in mini skirts, all touchy feely for passengers, lots of blue movies on, the LOS experience started as soon as you got on the plane. Unfortunately it never got going due to lack of numbers, but wondered if there was any mileage in members doing the same, ie chartering a jet and returning, say three weeks later. You can specify your own entertainment on board, meals etc.

Local football matches in Pattaya
benny27 replied to benny27's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Went to two games last week , KO 4.30 and 6 pm, first up was a league match, they won 2-1. Floodlights failed for 40 mins but got fixed and match and match carried on. Ground is in a college, and is basically temporary terracing, one side covered, and lots of food carts on hand. Great atmosphere and build up to the match and TV coverage. Admission is 60 baht and that includes a programme and access to most parts of the ground. I was suprised at the size of the crowd, approx 3,000, with prob 500 away fans. Man banging drum all game a bit annoying, so sat on opp side. there are two guys d -
New gogo rumoured to open on LK metro
benny27 replied to Obsession's topic in Bars/Gogos/Business Owners' Forum
I'm there now, no signs or rumours of a new go go but I'll keep my er to the ground -
Quite honestly, I can't praise the bell bus service enough, I don't want the hassle of getting a taxi and negotiating prices after a long flight. They always drive too fast and you never quite know whether you are going the right way. 200 baht door to door is the bargain of the year in LOS.

Local football matches in Pattaya
benny27 replied to benny27's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Thanks for the replies, looks a great time to be had, I'm arriving in Pats on 18th and will be going to what looks like the last game of the season at home on 24th October, if the website is correct. Have never seen any football in THailand, can't wait to see a game. Get so fed up watching football on TV. Will let you have a report when I've been, on the whole experience. -
I sa there a local football team I can watch in Pattaya, I'm there in a few days and would love to see a live match. I've seen the shirts on sale in the market, so I know there is something going on, but where and when?

It Pattaya a Hideout City for(criminal) ex-pats?
benny27 replied to Al_Davis's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Pattaya is full of small time crookswho reckon they are big time ganstas, just hang out on the beach in the early hours to get the info -
Friends back home like postcards, so last two trips sent about 12 each time. Pre printed adresses to stick on the cards, went to PO in Soi PO, got the right stamps, air mail stickers. But not one on either occasion got the the destination, most of which are in the UK. Is it just bad luck, has anyone else had any problems? Or do you reckon they just get lost in a sorting office somewhere?

Mahan Air from BHX to BKK £330 (including tax)
benny27 replied to jogsuk's topic in Airline Discussion
Looked at their website, have online booking but appears you can only book on this for flights to and from Iran. Will give them a ring and get a quote. Like you say, these look on the face of it like the bargain of the century... until you get the 'real' price. Can't see a problem about going to Tehran, you are in transit with a load of other international trevellers and not on the streets of the city. Was in Khartoum in the Sudan some years back and there was a military coup whilst I was in the transit lounge and it did not stop flights going in and out of the aiport. Will let you -
They say book early for the cheapest fares, but I can only go from Humberside- Ams-Bkk, as I live in the sticks on the Lincolnshire coast, would take me ages to get to London or Manchester, and they are quoting £750 ish in October. Seems very expensive to me. Have checked all the usual sites - Kayak, Opodo, Expedia, etc. Is there anything I can do? Perhaps later in the year the price will come down?

Giving loads of s/hand clothes to room cleaner
benny27 replied to benny27's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
In fact, I did just that, gave a load of stuff to the cleaners, they all know me well, and I know which ones have husbands/children that the clothes will suit. No rubbish or tatty stuff mind. It was no problem, as I have nothing much else in my suitcase when I come over apart from the clothes. Next time I will take kids stuff for the orphanage, I hadn't thought of that, it seems a worthwhile thing to do. Although clothes seem cheap to us in Thailand, if you've got no money they are not so. -
Hi guys, I've got a load of clothes, mine and kids, all good quality (M and S etc) and many are new but unsued, seems a waste to leave them in UK, going over in a few days and got an empty suitcase, so could take'em over. But don't know what to do when I get over there, shall I just off off load them on to the cleaner or someone? Reception staff might think it a bit odd if I hand them over swathes of gear they did not expect. I know the staff at my hotel very well, by the way. Or is there some charity that would use them? Of rooure, I'm not bringing over winter gear, all stuff you could

I like to read the newspapers (I buy at least one per day, usually two) and at the end of my stay I've got a huge pile of them , ditto plastic and glass bottles. I usually leave the bottles by the side of the bin as I reckon there is a market for them and the cleaner in my hotel might as well have them, but what happens to the papers? Is there a recyling bin anywhere in town? Seems a huge waste just to chuck them out.

My mate saw an Elvis T shirt, black with a large picture of the King's face on the front - a reproduction of a postage stamp, he says, and asks me to get him one. I've seen those shops that specialise in black coloured T shirts, in the Made in Thailand market and one on the LH side of 2nd road between Soi 8 and the Central road heading towards Big C. Anyone seen them around? Reason is, I've got a short stop in Pattaya so if I know where they are, I don't have to waste time looking around to get him one. They are so good he reckons he will be framing it!

What are China Alrlines like to travel with
benny27 replied to berettakid's topic in Airline Discussion
They are pretty good, only ever flew with KLM before, but last trip and next trip is China. I go with whoever is cheapest. One bonus is KLM give you a tiny 25cc beer, China you get a full size can of Taiwan beer ( Asoka or similar name?). Thought the planes were modern and clean, inflight entertainment very mediocre but I prefer to read anyway -
