I don't mind weaker drinks so much since they prolong a semi-sober evening but some bars are absurdly stingy with my gin tonics--in those places I stick to beer.

Spent a few days in Hua Hin last spring and going back this November. Important for me: decent beach, a small number of available ladies, laid back tempo, farang-friendly. Will also check out the smaller towns south of HH. Chiangmai is nice but no beach alas.

Stayed at Metropole this March. Pool too small to be of real use. No hot water, barely tepid in shower. Wi fi in room did not work but fine in lobby. Breakfast room packed by with what seemed to be groups from Russia & Eastern Europe. Would not choose to stay there again. Hope others in the chain are better.

Great idea. Wish more eating places would do the same. Can't count how many times I've passed on a small Thai place I would love to try but have no idea what they are offering to eat. I know other visitors who do the same since we are Thai-less as far as reading goes. Will look forward to giving the place a try since I usually stay at Areca Lodge---Thanks for the tip/plug!

On my trip last month saw several Thai ladies giving change to the street beggars; had not seen that before.

Small bills in one pocket, larger in another. All with velcro closures---not classy but, hey, this is Pattaya!

It's not about being conscientious nor is it about morality. Purely a practical matter. Plenty of girls available so why stir this particular pot when it could easily turn bad for everyone involved? And doesn't it all depend on what the arrangement is with the girl? If you have an understanding like Gabor had with his live-in then no problem. Sponsors are a different issue.

I'm on a MAC and while I don't believe they are completely immune to all the crap out there have yet to see same on my system....and believe me, I visit some very iffy sites. Probably that will change over the next few years but for right now I roam with relative impunity.

Last time I took a taxi from the airport to Suk soi 8 it took nearly 3 friggin hours due to traffic---as long as the flight from Manila to BKK...and was a mid-week early afternoon arrival. Will be thrilled to take the BTS to Suk in the future. Once I arrived at the hotel desk clerk says--"oh yes, happen all time in BKK". BTS all the way for me!

When I was last in Pattaya---Nov. '07---there was a high rise (hotel?) going up across the soi from Sandy Spring. Any member know what hotel it might be and whether finished yet? I liked being on Soi 13 and Sandy Spring is OK but would be tempted to check out a newer place if available. Thanks for any info.
