Having been a visitor to Pattaya for many years it troubles me that the place is beginning to descend into the social mire. :crying

Over the years there have been increased reports of robberies from tourists, scams, muggings and now so many shootings. :D

Each week when I check the Pattaya mail

http://www.pattayamail.com/current/news.shtml (link to this weeks edition)

I see more disturbing stories all the time, people fighting, people getting shot, yobs from my country (England) taking up residence and comitting crimes.

For goodness sake people, Thailand is a lovely country- normally welcoming safe and friendly, but my faith has been shaken. :beer

I wonder what we should do? perhaps ban the russians for a start! (only joking)

Sounds just like any city in the UK.

Surprising to see this in Pattaya with the strictness of things there.

What if they got 24 hour licensing as in the UK.

Hi clubman,

:P It kinda surprises me too. I have visited the Pattay 'Monkeyhouse' and a large jail in BKK so I am amazed anyone does anything wrong!

Amazingly, people still deal in drugs in LOS! Even some really dumb Farangs. Yet It was only a year or so ago that the dealers were simply shot on site. :o I would worry if I parked on a double yellow line! :D

My guess is that its dissafected youth and the shite we naturally bring with us from The US and europe. :D

If it gets much worse, Pnhom Phen will be safer!!! :nod

Man, this is EXACTLY what's causing the problem.

Not in the sense you presumably meant it i.e. severe punishment for offenders, but this bloody silly pseudo-western politically correct social order policy and similar head-up-your-arse thinking.

Ironic ain't it. Pattaya had social order, in relative terms at least, when it had a free and easy do-as-you-like attitude, then along comes the "Social Order Policy" and the whole thing starts going out of the fucking window from day one. The more order they try to impose, the more disorder they'll create. Catch 22.

If they had 24 hour licensing? Things would improve. Same as they will in the UK. :D

be seeing you

Hey pattayahappy - Followed your links and read-up on Pattaya. Loved the 'Russian liquid courage' caption! Are all Russians as bright as those three?

Anyway followed the links to the Chiang Mai Mail. It's like drug city up there according to the articles. My question: What the heck is Ya ba? http://www.chiangmai-mail.com/current/news.shtml#hd16

If you all want a sad little laugh read-up on these two: 'Drug trafficking couple arrested for overloaded underwear - Police probably think the man was nuts' http://www.chiangmai-mail.com/current/news.shtml#hd17

ya = drug ba= crazy crazy drug. A form of speed/crack that is used in Thailand. Dangerous drug if used alot. The real addicts smoke it. It is also very, very cheap.

the reason why it was in the Chiang Mai news is because most of it is produced in Burma and smuggled across the Northern Thai border and then distributed down south to where the population is.

since the governments "War on drugs" where there were over 2,500 ex judicial killings, it has been getting harder to find.

It is really nasty stuff.Even the most placid of people have been known to do crazy things after a good session and have dramatic mood swings.

I was told by a Thai lady that her brotther had a real yaba problem. After one long session, her brother did not sleep for 5 days as he thought ghosts were out to get him. :eyecrazy

Whilst we all like to take advantage of cheap airfares and the like lower prices inevitably means the arrival of the lower class of tourist.

I first went to Thailand in 1988 and prices are lower now in both real and absolute terms than they were then

I agree with Neil. When I first started visiting in 1989, I used to like telling people how much better the tourists behaved in "sleazy" Pattaya than in places like Faliraki & Ayia Napa, but now the gap has narrowed a lot. I hate to see it when some rat-arsed moron gets up on the platform in a bar and drops his trolleys, or makes a complete arse of himself with some street vendor. I think it's a combination of cheaper air fares, and the fact that naughty nightlife (trying to keep within forum rules here) is seen as much more acceptable by a younger, more self-centred generation, as evidenced in the rise in popularity of stag trips to Amsterdam or Prague. Shame, because for all its rough edges, Pattaya used to be a much nicer, easier-going place a few years ago.

Trouble is, this is what Toxin's saying about us. :beer

Each country has it's share of yobs. Fortunately it's a long expensive plane ride for our yobs to make.

One of the reasons for the scams is becuase the Police do not get involved in expat affairs and at the same time get blind to others.

The discount scam cards and otherwoperated by a German and targeting only westerners (see http://www.pattayascam.com), which have been denouncing for more than 6 months, is till alive in spite of the numerous complains.

It is a sad state of affairs and the only way that this can be improved is by active participation, when possible, in donouncing and isolating scams and other similars.

And yobbism is one area where America most definitely doesn't lead the world. :beer
