The four main players on that route are Thai, Bangkok Airways, AirAsia and Nok Air. For overall value for money I would opt for Nok Air's "Nok Plus" option. Effectively a business class product at economy class fares. To be truthful, you could make a case for each of the four and they all would excel in some areas and disappoint in others. Bangkok Airways have a good option to do a free stopover in Sukhothai so you effectively get two side trips for the price of one.

I flew with Nok to/from Chiang Mai last April. All was very smooth and professional. I looked at the + option but for a 1 hour flight, I was quite happy in economy.

Don't know if you're a golfer, but Nok + allows 25kg baggage, if you've got clubs with you that could save you money on excess baggage charges.

edit; oops, the numbers got lost somewhere; it was 25Kg baggage.

I would not recommend the low cost carrier One-Two-Go run by Orient Thai. I used them in July. They flew an old 747 "Classic Model" to Chiang Mai and for the return trip ended up cancelling their flight, which they seem to have a habit of doing.

I agree with other members that use Bangkok Air, or if you don't mind paying close to double the price, Thai Air has many flights.

Air Asia has the best fare. Can I book when I get to Bangkok for a flight the next day? I'll be in Bangkok March 1 and I want to go to Chang Mai before Pattaya. I figure, "Hell . . . I'm going to a foreingn country half way around the world I may as well see something other then beer bars and girls, girls, girls . . ." Can I book online?
