I know Im going to owe alot of beer to you guys when I get over there.

Some general questions:

The bars/gogos etc- are there dress codes to adhere too.

Ive booked Areca Lodge - the reviews seem ok and from what I understand its close to the action. I got a Deluxe room, best available, any thoughts or comments?

Just a comment on dress code.

The mini market outside View Talay 1 has a notice on the door stating that "in accordance with the law", you will not be allowed inside unless you are wearing shoes (sandals are OK) and a shirt (t shirt OK).

The bit about wearing shoes is a bit strange as you will greatly offend Thais if you do NOT take off your shoes before entering their house. Any Thais coming into my condo remove their shoes immediately. I follow their example when at home now and only put my shoes on just before I go out.

Hi db74,

Dress in Pattaya is casual.

Shorts, jeans or slacks.

Singlets, tshirts or shirts.

Thongs, runners or shoes.

Take your pick you won't be out of place.

RightSaid.

You forgot black socks and shoes. :banana

You can be fat, bald, and sport a speedo as long as you bring money. If you want to wear a tux on soi 6 then as they say up to you. Don't worry you'll will do just fine until you have to go back :banana

Pattaya is used to the casual vacationer. If you go to the back country or to the Wats, long pants and at least a polo shirt are the minimum. Only lower classes or laborers fail to wear shirts or wear shorts.

I usually wear long pants at night because it give a better impression to the ladies and also, there is Malaria present in Thailand, which is more apparent during the rainy season (ie. NOW )

Cheers

Thats bollocks. The ladies don't care what you wear as long as it and you are clean.

As for malaria, then that is bollocks too.

One serious thing though is to have access to cash and more than you think. Multiple credit and debit cards are the best way, backed up with some cash. Don't change money until in LOS as rates very poor. Use ATM at the airport.

Also, bring clothes. yes cheap in LOS but you don't come to Pattaya to spend all day shopping in 40c heat do you. Some idiots do but they they have probably been out in the sun too long !!!

torrenova,

I didn't say that Malaria was present in Pattaya per say but in Thailand, especially near the border with Cambodia. To me that isn't that far and I am always more careful when going to Koh Chang for example. If you choose not to believe, then that's up to you but you might want to readthis first:

the only dress code you need to adhere to mate is remembering to dress the little guy in rubber at the end of the night

Very true

Also true clean smell good and a smile on your face and you will be in good shape.

Regarding malaria, there is no risk in Pattaya and other major cities. There is a higher risk in the border areas and appropriate precautions should be taken if visiting these areas. Interestingly, the island of Ko Chang, at least according to the NHS Scotland IS a high risk area and precautions should be taken if visiting there.

All the above, plus a VERY open mind.

I checked in at the airport, to fly home, in August just gone, and was wearing a neat casual shirt, and semi formal/Bermuda type shorts. At the check in, I didn't notice, as I don't speak Thai, but the girl must have been on the phone to her boss, who approached my to ask if I had any trousers. I couldn't believe that he was going to refuse to allow me on the plane, as I was incorrectly dressed. But he politly explained that if I had "trousers", he could upgrade me to Business class. My one and only pair of trousers, which I always take, "just in case" were at the very top in my suitcase. A quick change, in the gents toilet, and a few minutes later I was on my way.

As the Boy Scouts moto says "Be prepared".

Good point. I nearly went to Ko Chang last trip and wasn't aware until I came back to Blighty that it is malarial. I didn't even think of the risk, so I think you can become complacent if you are used to the place.
