Travel Hard Drives

I'd like to get one to use from my computer to internet cafes. Anyone ever used one? What were the pros and cons? Thanks.

bought an external hard drive at the com center on South Pattaya road. 4000 baht all in for a 40GB hard drive with 5 year guarantee.

buy one of the seagate pocket hartd rives for $99. The plug in the usb slot. about twice the sizew of a half dollar coin.

So how does it work? Can I simply plug it into any internet cafe computer and have access to all my data?

Plug into USB slot, click on My Computer and click on the device logo. You will see all your files. Easier than replacing a GF in Pattaya.

Don't think the cafe manager would be to keen on you plugging flash drives or hard drives in to his p.c's with the case of viruses ETC

I bought a jump drive for 400 baht in carrefour. (only 64mb but works well) good for downloading trip reports and reading them at home.

always ask before I plug it in and never had a refusal (as long as they have a USB port) couple of cafes in pattaya klang between 2nd and 3rd roads are quite ok about it.

I have plugged in flash drive at many places and have never been refused when i asked. The seagate drive is not a flash drive, it is a mini hard drive. about the size of a small mouse. a good deal at $99. if a small drive is all that is required then there are plenty of falsh drives availabe. I think I would buy in us or UK or at least make sure I go to pantip plaza in bkk if I was going to buy in LOS.

Never been a problem for me either. I usually just hold up the device and the lady just nods her approval to use it.

 

As with most hardware, it's often best to buy it from the country you use it most in.

 

Pros: Too many to mention. Size, portability, storage size, able to store different media types, easy access, etc, etc.

 

Cons: I truly cannot think of any. A few years ago, the cost would have been prohibitive but they are so cheap now and the storage size has increased considerably.

I am kind of an idiot when it comes to Flash drives but can I purchase a Travel Flash drive, take it on my trip and download pics from my digital camera everyday.

 

 

1) How difficult would this be to do?

 

2) Do I need any special programs?

 

3) Is this the easiest way to store my photos when in LOS until I get back home?

 

Any info on the simplest and easiest way to save my pics everyday and clear my camera (SD card) memory would be appreciated. (And others will appreciate it when I do a trip report with pics )

It's a sound plan. You'll find that as long as the PC your at is using Windows XP you wont need to d/load any drivers etc.

 

A 1 gig flash drive will hold heaps of pics, especially if you set your camera up to format them at say 600x800 size, or 1 under the 'best' resolution.

 

Please note 1 item of concern: If you are taking explicit pics, be aware that customs on your return can seize and open any storage drives you have, including flash drives. (They are well aware of camera cards, zip drives, flash drives etc etc)

 

A 3rd option is a bit fiddlier but overcomes this. Sign up to a free pic wharehouse such as http://photobucket.com

 

Connect you camera to the cafe pc, open the site, and upload your pics direct to the online album you've created - (with password access). Then simply empty out your camera card, and carry on snapping

I have had an unfortunate experience in dealing with U.S Customs.

 

Remember that if Customs really gets a bug up there ass, they can retrieve data from a flash drive or camera that has been erased. Most of these devices are like windows - They do not erase the data, only the address where the data is.

 

They have software that can scan the device and retrieve data even when it appears empty.

That's a newie on me! Still I suppose that's nothing different from recovering a pc's HDD.

 

Perhaps if you reformatted the drives - that'd wipe em clean?

That may help. I understand that their is a utility program that guarantees that any data will be erased. It writes data to all sectors 5 times to prevent somebody reading any faint signals from previous writings.

 

I don't know about Cameras or flash disks as I do not know the technical details on how they are formatted, but I would guess that if you could overwrite every sector, that would be adequate to destroy any old data.

I've used them for a bout 2 years. Had some pretty ripe pics on there at times. Never had a problem with them.

get a www.gmail.com or a few yahoo email accounts and email the pics to your self
