I stayed there in dec. The reservation people are idiots. The online reservations showed I had a confirmed reservation but the staff insisted I didn't have a reservation. Then after finally checking me in they accussed me of making duplicate reservations.

I was in a delux queen room (1400 baht) the first night. Room was small but effeciently organized. It had a balcony overlooking the pool. The pool is one of the nicer hotel pools in pattaya. The 2nd-4th nights I was in a queen suite room (1700) The room was bigger but so poorly laid out that it had less usuable space than the smaller queen delux room. ( both rooms had a King size bed by the way) The bathroom in the queen suite was the same size as the smaller queen room. The suite had 2 balaconies both overlloking the service garage where the staff got up at 6 in the morning and staretd banging on things. Both rooms had the same size air conditioning units. In the smaller room it worked fine. In the bigger room the a/c unit struggle to keep the room cool.

I was suppose to stay for 8 more days. I checked with another hotel and they had a cancelation and could now take me so I moved and spent the last week at a different hotel in a better room for less money. The mercure was lousy with french. I say good for them, let them pay too much for mediocre quality. I will stay at the mercure again if my other hotels are full. otherwise it is on the bottom of my list.

BTW I am a soffitell privledge member as well as an accor accent member. The registration staff refused to recognize both memberships. After my stays at the mercure roxy in sing, the mercure pattaya, the novotel in france, the novetel in bkk, and the soffitel in bangkok I am thru with anything those fucking worthless french idiots have. the only good hotel of the bunch was the sofitel silom in bangkok. And they fucked up my reservation as well. Probaly the worst managed hotel chain in the world. Undoubtably subsidized by the french government. 2guns 2guns

Cowboy, What was the hotel you went to after the Mecure? I'm going in Feb and am looking for a hotel. Thanks...

I went to my favorite standby the sandy springs. I am a member so delux seaview is 1200 baht. Rooms was bigger than mercure, bathroom was bigger than mercure. Price was 500 baht less. Pool is small. No wireless internet. Mecure has wireless internet but you pay like 180 baht for 1 hours use.

Mercure is a brand new hotel and it shows. Sandy is a few year old and you can tell. between 2nd rd and beach road so easy to get anywhere. Mercure is probably 1kilo from 2nd road. You can walk but it has a tuk tuk that is available 24 hrs a day and you never have to wait. The tuk tuk guys btw were really great. If you walk the street you will find that it is narrow and there is a lot of traffic. The entrance to mercures soi is right before royal gardens.

A new hotel between dunasty and sandy spings is whitehouse condotel very nice rooms for 1500 baht. fabulous suite for 3000 baht. website

Another question Cowboy.

I will be staying at the Areca Lodge for the 6th time on my 6th trip so obviously I like it and don't want to change. :grin-jump

A couple of my mates have booked in at the Mercure. On our last trip, when it had just opened they went over there, saw the manager and negotiated a daily rate of 1300 baht not including breakfast.

They booked me in as well but I have since cancelled. Sent an e-mail to the hotel but didn't receive a reply. :grin-jump

I have been there for a drink in the Jazz bar and it all looks nice and new. In the bar we were drinking whisky. We asked for Thai whisky but they served us JW Black Label instead. Not being dedicated whisky drinkers we didn't know the difference. Slight price difference though. :chogdee2

The cock-up in the bar and the hotels absolutely crap location (no bars, no laundries, no restaurants etc. nearby) convinced me to stay at the Areca again. Although the Areca does have a Gala dinner and imposes a surcharge over the Xmas/New Year period. :grin-jump

The drink prices at the Mercure seemed to be a lot higher than the Areca, so I would imagine the food prices are too. My mates tactics are they don't usually go to breakfast so don't want to pay. Instead they get up in the afternoon and eat poolside, Falang food only. Personally I think they will get shafted for the food and as there is nothing nearby they will have to either put up with it or get on a taxi just to have a snack. :grin-jump

Have you any thoughts on this Cowboy as in Areca Lodge v. Mercure?

Its a good distance to 2nd Rd and although from what I've read that they have a tuk tuk that will take you from the hotel I would be worried about returning late at night as there isn't much light or activity along that stretch of soi. Not a problem if they have rented a motorbike or are always traveling as a group. It's location will be greatly improved once they open that new mall and it has access to both soi 15 and 2nd Rd.

Emil

Thanks for the reply.

It was around 9PM when we had the drinks in the Mercure. We then walked down the Soi to Second Road. Your right about it being dimly lit and very little activity.

(Apart from rabid Soi dogs appearing out of the gloom and going ape shit.)

Personally I don't find Pattaya an intimidating place but I would not want to walk along that particular Soi after dark. IMO it is a prime spot to be attacked. :D

My mates intend going to the same bars as when staying at the Areca and intend starting from the Areca Beer Garden. :moon

I haven't discussed it with them as they can stay where they like just seems to me that whatever baht they may save on accommodation will be spent on moto taxis etc. especially after dark.

I think it was Rocco Forte who when asked what was the strategy for his successful worldwide hotel empire quipped "Location, Location, Location". :clap1

Agree that once that new building is up and open, allowing a direct route from the hotel to Second Road, then the Mercure's location will be markedly improved.

But until then I will give it a miss.

Just remembered.

The hotel location on the Mercure website, last time I looked, is incorrect. Deliberate faux pas peut etre? Mais non. :ang2

Its been a long time since the Mecure Pattaya has been discussed.

Thinking of staying there in November.

Anyone stayed there lately or heard any good/bad stories ?

Some reviews say no joiner fees ! Is this true ?

Any replies many thanks. :chogdee

I was there for one night about 18 months ago when Tim's did not have my room.

. The room was nice, but not large.

. The pool area was quite nice.

. No joiner fee

It is like a slightly more upscale Areca, catering to those who like to spend time at the pool.

Some might have an issue with location (fine by me).

Overall, as a matter of personal preference I would not stay there again. But if you think this is the type hotel you want there are no surprise negatives in store.

French run so food of a good standard.

Nice pool and surrounding area.

I don't think the location is so bad, pretty close to 2nd rd if you walk through The Avenue, although I would not like to stagger down soi 15 from Buakhao in the early hours.

I do so regularly. It is well lit, there are quite a few security guards around because of the condos along Soi 15, a small beer bar that stays open, a karaoke place, and a base for motorcycle taxis.

If you are at the Mercure and going to WS by the most direct route, you would not walk through The Avenue - simply walk down Soi 15 to Second Road.

Thinking of using my Accor points to stay here in November. Can anyone give me an update on whether or not there is a joiner fee?

Thanks

Thanks

Stayed here last 10 visits, I always book a double so no joiner fee. If the receptionist or security are new the girls leave id card at reception and when they leave I get a call to make sure everything ok.

Most of the receptionists and security guys know me so just say goodnight.

I was last there in Dec 2012 and they had just flattened field behind hotel so dont know if they are staring to build something. There was some work going on behind the Pattay Bay Resort but there was little noise and didnt bother me at all.

I always have a room at the rear and a high floor so overlooking the pool

There is quite a bit of building going on behind the Mercure, but they are past the pile driving stage which is the worst. You will still get traffic hassle with the trucks trying to get there down Soi Buakhao. I go to this hotel most Sundays for the Expats Club meeting and have stayed there too.....I am concerned it is deteriorating service wise, slow clean-up in the coffee shop, lack of replenishment at the buffet etc. Staff seem friendly but there seems to be a shift away from the French base to more Eastern Guests.
