Self Storage in Pattaya

If one is doing a move, and one doesn't want to ante up $10,000 to have a lot of stuff shipped, it would seem that baggage limits on airlines could allow on to incrementally move one's stuff to Pattaya over a period of several trips.

 

Not furniture, of course. Just an accumulation of books and other things.

 

But . . . an obstacle is the issue of self storage facilities in Pattaya. Anyone know of any and price tags?

Slightly off topic but worth mentioning here. Until the last quarter of last year, you could import ONE shipment of personal effects free of duty if you had a retirement visa. That has now changed to a work permit (and maybe some other types of visa?). At today's meeting of the Pattaya Ex-Pats Club, one member said that he had just had a 2nd shipment sent out from Norway to Thailand - mainly CD's and books and Customs wanted to know how many books and CD's were in each case. They also wanted to know the names of the artists on the CDs.

 

I brought all my camera equipment in to Thailand over 2 flights though my tripod was shipped over.

 

Owen's suggestion is a good idea - IF you can get someone to store it for you or you can find a company to store it for you for a nominal fee.

I suspect no one makes the move without numerous investigation trips first.

 

Those investigation trips can save one a lot of shipping money by bringing an extra bag of luggage each trip. Given the duty points Alan makes above, it may be wise to pack that extra bag with thought given to this so that if you are stopped for a random tourist screening check, it's not filled with 100 CDs and you are stuck trying to explain that you plan to spend your whole vacation listening to music.

 

BTW, there is no reason to ship CDs. They should be ripped to mp3 and it's trivially easy to do so. If you want them on CD later, reburn in LOS from the mp3 files.

 

Books . . . probably no dodging that. Pack them incrementally or ship them. Other things you can pack are certainly pictures, phones, stereos are very small now so probably those, obviously lots of clothing, vital documents you think you can't store in the home country.

 

Self storage in the US is pretty cheap in some locales. I expect to pay $50/month for enough volume to store everything from 30 yrs of adult life that I think I want to keep. If you look around your place and exclude furniture, which is always replaceable, I think you'll discover that there's really not that much to store.

 

What was the conclusion of the meeting, Alan. Is the Norwegian going to get away with his 2nd shipment -- meaning the rule has changed -- or will he be nailed with some duty or fine?

I am now living in Jomtien Beach, and I will check out the self storage. I to, needed one, as I moved here in increments, and this would have been a big help.

Thanks, Bill. It now occurs to me that there would be a market for this service, but it involves buying raw land so a Westerner probably can't do it without a corporation.

I'm no expert on this business. I've been looking into such place in the US on the presumption that there will be some array of a lifetime of stuff that will fall in the gray area of

 

1) I don't need it in LOS

 

2) I don't want to toss it.

 

What I see is advertised as "enough volume to store 2 full rooms of stuff" is about $50/month. The big deal with them is, however, and this addresses your idea -- that they have some climate control and they are behind a layer of security.

 

A small cheap room probably is okay climate wise, but zero security, yes?

 

Maybe that's too glib. Maybe there are cheap rooms in hotels with more pricey rooms that do have full security.

Right behind Big C on Sukemvit road is a row of shop houses, with storage spaces behind them. They are probably bigger than the OP needs. They are big enough to put two big motorcycles in them. I have a couple of friends sharing one for that reason. I don't know the price, they are in PI right now. For someone needing a larger place, or knows someone willing to share space, they may be a good option.

I'm not directly arguing, mostly because that's what I have done. But the fact is that ripping to MP3 loses a HUGE amount of the CD quality, and you never get it back on a reburn. Some people sensitive to quality can rip the whole CD intact, or rip to a lossless format like FLAC - much better advice.

 

I totally agree in general that carrying CDs or anything digital including most books is crazy, unless you're a collector. Carrying movies is ludicrous. Books should go e-book and on a reader of some sort. It's goofy to be carrying all that stuff in 2011. It's heavy, it's costly and who cares that much unless you're a rare-book collector?

 

Almost all clothes should be discarded. It is crazy to carry almost anything electric or electronic, it can and should be replaced. Frankly, I don't even understand shipping furniture - why? You carry a few things you like, a few things you NEED, and that's it. Why a container full? You are MOVING your life, so move, already.
