It's a little bit bigger than a 747 and about 20 mph slower. The BBC website (when it comes back up) has a neat little comparison chart. Just shows what a great plane the 747 was when it came out 25 (?) years ago.

First flight of the Boeing 747-100 was Feb. 9, 1969, and it went into commercial service with Pan Am in January 1970, so you can say 36 or 37 years depending on which way you want to count it.

:chogdee2

The current generation, the 747-400 entered service in February 1989, but the latest version of the -400, the 747-400ER went into service in November of 2002. Many airlines have been refurbishing their older 747-400s with new interiors similar to the B-777 and the airlines are still taking delivery of new 747-400s.

A new generation, the Boeing 747-8, should enter service in September 2009.

:chogdee2 Yeah, this is one fuck off tablet of a plane!!!. I live near the factory in North Wales where the wings are built. The Beluga plane is always flying around here taking various parts of the A380 to France etc. Just a thought, when the airlines buy a fleet of these monsters, what will the price be for our whoring tickets? they gotta recoup their money somehow. Chog Dee lads!!! :clap2

I do not see it cheaper or faster. Just imagine a plane with 2x the passengers landing in Thailand.

Even if you are in the front and can get through immigration and customs first, your bags are still going to take forever.

So 2 x Boeing 747 never arrived at Bangkok airport at the same time?

I know Emirates have plans to use this plane on long haul flights with 600 passengers to copy the easy jet european system. If Emirates are succesful you could see the following fares :

London- Sydney £250.00

London - Hong Kong £200.00

London- Bangkok £ 200.00

London- New York £150.00

Above fares are exclusive of airport taxes.
