The exchange rate has been between 37 and 38 Baht to the dollar recently, and is currently at 37.7 You will probably get something slightly over 37 at the local exchange shops, maybe as much as 37.5 per dollar.

If you multiply your $1000 dollars by 37 or 37.5, you find that when you change your money, $1000 dollars will give you something a bit over 37000 Baht. So, if you pay 1000 Baht per shag, that's 37 Short Time shags for your $1000. Of course, you might also wish to eat, drink, sleep or take a cab with some portion of that money as well - not to mention having to pay your airport exit tax with 500 Baht at the end of your trip.

50 Baht is around $1.35, 500 Baht is around $13.50, and 1000 Baht is around $27.00.

Personally, I would say that $1000 U.S. might be enough for 2 weeks, if your Hotel is already paid for, and you are not a huge drinker, but not enough if you are including paying your hotel bill within it (two weeks of hotels in Pattaya will cost you from $300-600 or more, depending on whether you want some amenities or are a cheap charlie, and also whether you are travelling off peak or peak season). Also, frequent visits to places like the Eden Club in Bangkok will also eat away at your budget alot quicker than short time shags from a Beer bar or Beach Road freelancer.

If your not carrying around a calculator and you want to get a quick estimate of what a specific amount of baht is equal to in USD's, try this: Drop the last digit and divide by 4. So if you see something priced at 2855 baht, drop the 5 and divide by 4 and you get 71. This works almost perfectly when the exchange rate is 40 to 1. Since the rate is less than 40 to 1 you know that the item is going to cost you a few bucks more.

The exchange rate fluctuates but for simplicity I just assume a rate of 40 to 1 and it gets me in the ballpark without straining my brain.

Using one dollar as a base, 40 Baht is $1 ... it's easy to divide that down ... half of 40B (20B) would be half a dollar or 50 cents. So 30 Baht would be 75 cents, or 10 Baht would be a quarter. It boils down to a Baht is 2.5 cents. If you get that pretty well ingrained in your head it's easy to multiply out. It's very easy to multiply by 10's. Example:

1B is 2.5 cents so 10B is 25 cents, 100B is $2.50, 1000B is $25.00, 10,000B is $250.00, etc.

2B is 5 cents, so 20B is 50 cents, 200B is $5.00, 2000B is $50.00, 20,000B is $500, etc.

3B is 7.5 cents, so 30B is 75 cents, 300B is $7.50, 3000B is $75.00, 30,000B is $750, etc.

4B is 10 cents, so 40B is a Dollar, 400B is $10.00, 4,000B is $100, 40,000B is $1000

You now know 1000B is $25.00, so it's easy to figure out that 500B would be half that, or $12.50. Or 1500B would be $25.00 plus $12.50, ($37.50)

If you get up into the 10's of thousands of Baht, the difference in the exchange rate from a base of 40 to 1 is a little more critical, but for the lower amounts, the difference of an exchange of 38 to 1 and 40 to 1 only amounts to a few cents. Example: If you take 100B at 38 to 1 compared to 40 to 1, the difference is only 13 cents.

It's very simple with a bit of practice. I usually just figure 100B is $2.50 USD and it's very simple to figure it out from there by multiplying or dividing by 10.

You can manage on $1000 US for two weeks but what do you intend to buy? That is probably more important than anything else. If your here to buy gold $1000 won't last. If it's to buy clothes it probably will. Here is a possible break down for your two weeks:

Mr. Mac hotel next to Residence Garden is 600 baht a night and the rooms are ok. If you are here for 14 days and 13 nights the room would cost you approximately $208. 600 baht X 13 nights / 37.5 exchange rate. That leaves you $792. Food if you eat at places like the food court at any mall will run less than 100 baht per meal. If you are careful 300 baht a day should be ok. 300 baht X 14 days / 37.5 exchange rate = $112 US leaving you with $680. Your taxi too Pattaya from the airport and back again is 1200 baht each way using Mr. Toom. This is 2400 baht / 37.5 exchange rate = $64 US leaving you $616 US. As mentioned before you need 500 baht at the airport to leave 500 baht / 37.5 = $14 (rounded up) leaving you $602 US. Since Mr. Mac's is on the baht bus route it will cost you 10 baht each way for your trips around town. This does not allow for private baht bus use! If you budget 5 round trips a day that is 100 baht per day or 1400 baht / 37.5 = $38 (rounded up) leaving you $564. $564 X 37.5 = 21,150 baht for buying and sightseeing and whatever else you want such as a girl! I am sure others can help you and will add to the list. Remember if the exchange rate gets better 38 baht per dollar or so then you will have even more baht to enjoy LOS. http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic is what I use for the exchange rate. It is very easy to use because at the top is what is called the quick converter. The one side is already set for US$ so just use the pull down menu of the second currency and at the bottom is Thailand. Highlite it and click the convert button just to the right and it will show you the exchange rate.

I go to Thailand to buy Thai Pussy and other related items, but actually, I really prefer to rent, not buy, as I find it's much cheaper in the long run.

$1000 ain't much for two weeks in high season. As a newbie you're not likely to find the cheapest outlets for goods so you'll be buying at the touristy places. For sure you don't want to change all of you money at once; just a bit each day as needed. A drinky here and there and even just an occasional friendly lady will eat up your available cash so take an ATM card and have some backup money available just in case. It's hell to run out of funds. :clueless

I agree. General rule of thumb is; "if it flys, floats or fucks, it's cheaper to rent" <huh

Hi ,as with all questions of this sort its horses for courses, some might spend $500 in a day some very lucky and also very rich may spend much more but if $1000 is all you have then it will be more than sufficient. You can spend a lot more but only if you have a lot more.I have just returned from a 4 month trip and I averaged approx £1000 a month and that included my rent my bike and my air fare,I know that I am a cheap charlie but I dont drink (alcohol)I rarely go into GoGos and will select my partners from the girls on Beach Rd (500baht short time) my budget also contained a little extra for spending, 6 silk shirts, some shorts, 73 DVDs and 2 or 3 Two hour massages a week.I do everything I want to do and still have a good time on a budget.

PS I also have a shave every other day but I use a lady that charges only 50 baht so even with a 10 baht tip this is not much of an extravagence.
