A couple of quick questions for all you airline price gurus and fortune tellers:

1. What month does the Thaiair price drop for a high season (jan '09) flight? The flight is about $1700 now, if it drops to less than $1200, I would take it, saving my miles for later. Or...

2. I have enough miles for a United/Star flight. What is the minimum lead time for getting a decent flight?

3. I will be abroad for a month or more and would like to go to Singapore for a week. Does anyone book from JFK - SIN - BKK?

4. What will be the price of pork bellies futures in the future(s)?

SQ has a non stop from EWR to SIN then on to BKK. They may fly from JFK to FRA then SIN. Earlier you can book the higher your chances of getting a flight. I'm a premier executive with UA and the shortest lead time was 7 days.

SQ doesn't do economy from EWR. It is currently biz and premium economy but even premium economy is being dropped in favour of an all biz class service.

SIA steps up business focus

By Raphael Minder in Hong Kong

Singapore Airlines on Tuesday became the first airline to offer an all-business-class service across the Pacific, underlining growing competition among carriers to secure the higher and steadier revenues from business travellers.

SIA said it would remove economy seats on flights between the Asian city-state and Los Angeles as well as New York’s Newark airport. The overhaul will cut total seating on the five Airbus A340-500s used on the routes from 181 to 100; the present configuration includes 64 seats in business class.

SIA’s move is the latest in the growing trend for all-business-class services from established and start-up airlines, which began on transatlantic routes earlier this decade.

It's assuming a lot that Thai will still be running JFK non-stop flights next year. If SQ can't make the service pay for itself then it is reasonably safe to assume that Thai must be suffering on their current service.

United has the saver and standard economy seats. The saver only requires 60K miles while the standard economy is I believe 90K miles. They only dedicate a couple of the saver seats on each flight so they are more difficult to get. I've always gotten them but I know that the load factor is best if you go for dates that are during the week and not weekends. Also I always pay the additional $15 and talk to an agent. If you try to book online you only have access to the United flights while talking with an agent and they have access to all the Star Alliance carriers. Only once have I traveled from my home to BKK strictly on United, the others have been a mixture of Singapore/Thai and United flights.

With regard to the JFK to BKK flight on Thai Air. Are you trying to book economy or premium economy? Usually, the premium economy is around $1600-$1700, whereas the economy can be round $1200 or less. If it's more than that now, I'd maybe look for another carrier if you're trying to save money.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I called United and they got me started on a Thai JFK-BKK flight. I have about 70K miles, so I will have to buy another 20K for around $500 ...That's a steal if I can get the direct flight to BKK in business class.

The only problem is that I have only reserved the outbound leg. Now I must continue to call every couple of days and re-reserve the ticket until I get 330 days away from my return date (at least according to the United agent). I want to return the second or third week of Feb. so I hope this works out. At least my dates are flexible :)

---Funny, I just got a phone callI have a job interview on Friday morning that might put me one step closer to a job in Macau, but, put the brakes on spending five weeks in Thailand next winter.

I tried Sing. Air and I could book economy JFK - SIN - BKK for $1800 (painful) I could not book economy, but could book business EWR - SIN - BKK for a measly $8000. (fuck me). Oh well...

And right on cue .............

From today's Nation ..................

"The airline is considering re-routing two long-haul flights between Bangkok and Los Angeles or New York by adding South Korea or China as stopover stations."

For what it's worth to you, you can get the miles as a CC sign-up bonus. Used to be able to churn the cards, got over 100,000 myself, but have read that they are not so friendly about it anymore so if you already have cards from FisrtUSA might not work for you. Anyway, here's the link to some offers. Check the 'Credit Card' section.

Why not apply for a UAL credit card and receive 21K free air miles? Lot cheaper then paying $500.

A better offer is in the website I provided. Plus lots of other ways to get "free" miles.
