Another illegal immigrant

From the Telegraph

A Patagonian woman was sent back to her home country after British immigration officials refused to believe she was travelling to Wales to learn Welsh.

Evelyn Talcadrini, from Puerto Madryn, Argentina, was on her way to Glyndyfrdwy, near Llangollen, to spend six months living with a local family to practise her Welsh.

But she was put on a flight back to South America within hours of landing in the UK.

Now the Government has agreed to launch an investigation into her treatment after Plaid Cymru's Hywel Williams and Elfyn Llwyd raised the case in the House of Commons during Welsh questions.

Please. Who can believe any rational person smart enough to be eligible for stay in the UK would want to learn Welsh?

Even I never got past "Y Ddraig Goch ddyry gychwyn, mae fy hofrenfad yn llawn o lyswennod"

yes welsh is widely spoken in argentina, it suprised me when i found out years ago. the settled there to farm sheep and to work in the mines, and i believe in certain parts its spoken more than their native tongue and even english.

What wrong with the welsh language joekicker its probably the oldest language still spoken in europe and unlike english is unchanged in 1000's of years.

Dont u think thats a bit racist, perhaps you should vote for some right wing racist group next time your back in whatever country your evolved from.

sorry to rant like that but i hate "soft racism" in any way shape or form!!

Oh no the big R has raised it's head.

What happened to the days when, the Welsh were Taffy, Scots Jock, the English soft southern bastards.........

I am sure people got less upset about things before someone invented Racism.

In countries like Sweden, it is compulsory for kids to learn two foreign languages at school. They are sensible enough to realize, how restricting speaking just their own language can be, in the rest of the world.

Welsh ? Like Latin, old, but seldom used. There is a Welsh connection in S.America. Why come all the way here ?

We didn't have to dream up a derogatory name for The English. Being able to adapt the word stress gets the message across pretty well. It's quite a challenge teaching the Thais how to spit the word out. :D

So there is no one there who can teach it, ? surely it would be better to learn it there, as the tutor can translate, how many people in Wales speak her native language ?

its taught to every school age person from infant school right up to gcse time, its compulsary these days hand has been for over 10 years.

in the north and west of wales its their first language, its estimated out of a population of approx 6/8 million at least 60% are fluent and approx 50% use it in their daily lives.

hence channel 4 being S4C which is solely a welsh speaking station up to 8pm i think.

so that roughly between 3 and 4 million welsh speakers ....quite a sizable amount, dont you say?

I was refering to someone in her native country of Patagonia teaching her, as so many of them apparently speak Welsh.

She would need to find someone in Wales who speaks Patagonian or whatever they speak there ( is it Welsh  ) to be able to translate.

I know the Welsh fought very hard to keep their traditional language alive, T.V. and Radio for instance, as well as tuition in schools.

Translation is the key to learning any foreign language, and finding a Welsh, teacher fluent in Patagonian sounds like a tall order.

 The population of Wales is around 3m ........ does 6-8m include the sheep, or what?

According to the Welsh Language Board just under 600,00 people in Wales, roughly the same number as the population of Sheffield, speak Welsh.

Just to test out the consistency of procedure at immigration. Someone should bring a B.G to Liverpool to learn Scouse !

It's more widely spoken that Welsh, so that could swing it in her favour.

Lucky for YOU? What about the rest of us, on tenterhooks, hanging painfully by our thumbs wondering if we'd gone too far with racist posts about Welshing, and suspenseful over whether you'd give a monkey's to the point of making veiled threats about it.

I don't speak for ALL of us, but a LOT of us are very relieved you don't give a monkey's, I'll tell you. It's a relief.

You never know. Stranger things, and all.

Hey, Zampa: Maybe you're right. Maybe I just hadn't paid attention before your thread

just as well really or this forum would be full of grump old fuck witts, eeking out their meaningless lives clinging onto their long past youth and pawing over girls that are young enough to be their grand children.

Nothing veiled about that comment hope i do meet ya as then i'll get my point across to you face to face.

much more civilised dont ya think instead of bitching behind a computer screen and 6000 miles of broadband connection.

Hope springs eternal, I suppose.

Don't ask me, I have nothing to prove. I hadn't considered the possibility that "civilised" applied in your claims about "racism" towards the tragic and newly classified race of Welsh. I'd say "bizarre" in place of civilised, actually.

But we agree that there's one hell of a good reason why you don't quote any bitching from me - don't we?

Phuocking amazing to me how a bit of light-hearted English newspaper fluff can absolutely enrage keyboarders. Educational even.

Just to test out the consistency of procedure at immigration. Someone should bring a B.G to Liverpool to learn Scouse !

Good one. I had seven Thai wives, girlfriends and a couple over to see that Mee and my Dad thingy and the two ridiculous BBC3 reality shows of the Britkids in Isan and Bangkok. These were people I chose because of their excellent English, so they wouldn't need subtitles, but they were leaning in and really working on what some of those people were saying. I even joked to them that next time I was going to show them Liverpool shows.

I may do a post on their reactions if I get time, but suffice to say they were totally and completely negative. A real BBC failure to communicate.

They didn't think any of it was racist though. heh

It's not full, plenty of room for more! You think 'pawing over girls young enough to be their grandchildren' is meaningless??

We were all white then, so no harm done.

A majority of young people leave to work in other countries and we also have large number of old immigrants from the english cities .

in the last census over 30% of the peole of voting age had not been born here

FYI research into bilingualism notes that allthough the very young tend to have a smaller vocabulary than monoglots it seems to delay senukity and alzheuimers for 4 to 6 years.

Argentinians speak mostly Spanish although a lot of then speak Italian , German ,Native languages and English
