Recommended Posts

Whenever 4niceight bumps into me these days it always seems to be just after Rooney's played a blinder!

' Rooney's......the best Englishman ever to play the game of football'

'You reckon?' I ask.

Aye we'rout a shadow a doubt'

'Better than Moore,Charlton,keegan..........Beckham??'

'We'rout shadow!'

Personally.

I think there's a little more to greatness than young Master Wayne has achieved so far. Heart, soul, selflessness, leadership, rising to a great moment (can you say "World Cup"?)... the list goes on and on. You don't have to get them all, but surely you have to get some??? Scoring some goals in club matches doesn't rate English greatness to me. That's not a putdown in any manner. This is a wonderfully talented player, but give him some time and opportunity to be great and see what he does with that opportunity. First *big* chance - South Africa. Let's be realistic and remember how many "great" players simply couldn't do anything once they got on foreign grass. Give Rooney a chance.

in a race yea piece of piss, he aint fast, he's fat

please come on

dont talk bollox

anyway all that ink on your backwould slow you down

i think you should take a look at this

He covers around 11.82km during a match. This is incredibly almost 1km more than Luis Figo's average! And strikers are supposed to do less work.

How much of this is spent sprinting?

This is all broken down into different categories of speed.

4,000m Wayne is walking

4,800m jogging

1500m running

1,000m light sprinting

500m sprinting

Wayne's successful passes in a game

and then this

As shown at Euro 2004, Rooney has the pace to burn past most defenders.

He clocks up 9.70 metres per second. And that's not too far off the pace of a sprinter like Maurice Greene who weighs in at just over 10 m/s.

i really think you shoud stick to things you know

like a brit needing a visa to enter england lol

i dont know you mate but please

educate yourself about things a bit more dont want you looking silly now do we

oh yes and that gos for you too

But Rooney has been playing international football since Euro 2004!

Rooney is the best player that England has ever had by a million mile but he still would not lace Messi's boots.

Messi has the potential to be as good as Maradonna.

i wouldnt go that far

theres been better

but i think he is going to get a lot better

When Rooney first burst on the scene in an international tournament, whilst still in his teens, everyone was predicting that he would be the new white Pele - including Pele himself.

However, the 6 years since then have shown that although he will always remain a dangerous player, he will never joined the ranks of the exalted greats.

He has had 6 years! More than enough time between the ages of 18 - 24!

Given that he is a 'big boned' player who easily puts on weight then he is not likely to be the sort of player who will have two more world cups to look forward to after this one in order to show how 'great' he is.

Shakespeare enjoyed a bit of a kick-around in his day - apparently. :D
Sir Winston scored for Harrow in extra time, but preferred fencing.

Tim Berners-Lee was a decent enough keeper in his early days. It's said that the ball carrying nets was what gave him the idea for the www.

International football is of a lower standard , due to limited choice of players. You never get a team with as many world class players in every position as you do in champions league football , or top half premiership teams. However, the flaws/ weaknesses in international teams, make it a good spectacle.

Paul Gascoigne, Bobby Charlton, Duncan Edwards, Bryan Robson, Glen Hoddle, Chris Waddle, David Platt, Jimmy Greaves to name just a few. :beer

Started with an ex Glasgow Rangers player

But, WTF was David Platt doing there :D Is he your uncle? 1luv

It's just about possible to be a 'Great' without the international achievements to back the claim up. George Best being the singular case in point..... Rooney's not in Best's contemptuous class yet. You'd actually struggle to convince me that there is, or ever was, anyone quite in that class. Best took the piss! Only Pele and Maradonna (cheating Shit) could do that.

But Rooney for best Englishman "We'rout a shadow" ??............ Even if his career was, (hopefully not), cut short tomorrow. There'd be many fight his corner, 4niceight for one. Let's hope he stays free of injury and gets the chance, unlike Best to push his case on the international stage through a couple more World Cups.

may i just add a note, the title of the thread is "the greatest englishman to play football"

now rooney is not a great english man, he is just a footballer.

if we are being factual then how about sir winston churchill, im sure he played footie, and was for sure maybe one of the greatest english men of all time.

footballers are overpaid pansey's who dont really achieve anything in their lives, but a hell of a lot of money for not much at all.

so can any footballer be a great englishman, i'mafraid the answer is no, well not for just playing football.

Best was not English.

Wayne Rooney is an English man from Irish decent.

Ceallach O'Rooney was the chief poet of Ireland in 1079.

In my opinion Wayne Rooney is the greatest Englishman to play football.
