Is Rooney the greatest Englishman to play football?

Recommended Posts

It's just about possible to be a 'Great' without the international achievements to back the claim up. George Best being the singular case in point..... Rooney's not in Best's contemptuous class yet. You'd actually struggle to convince me that there is, or ever was, anyone quite in that class. Best took the piss! Only Pele and Maradonna (cheating Shit) could do that.

But Rooney for best Englishman "We'rout a shadow" ??............ Even if his career was, (hopefully not), cut short tomorrow. There'd be many fight his corner, 4niceight for one. Let's hope he stays free of injury and gets the chance, unlike Best to push his case on the international stage through a couple more World Cups.

George Best IRISH........DRUNK.......WOMAN AND CHILD BEATER.............DRUGGY

hardly the greatest of anything really

Best was not English.

Wayne Rooney is an English man from Irish decent.

Ceallach O'Rooney was the chief poet of Ireland in 1079.

In my opinion Wayne Rooney is the greatest Englishman to play football.

Game, set and match to you sir!

After all those years of Englishmen playing for Ireland because their grannies once owned an 'Irish Setter' have come full circle.

I'm speechless!

from a yanks perspective...he's good, but being the best that has ever played......not sure about that one. Call me crazy, but i am quite sure there are a few that fit teh description one of best in the game. Beckham comes to mind as being one of the best. (keep in mind I have only been really interested in this game over the past few years or so)

International football is of a lower standard , due to limited choice of players. You never get a team with as many world class players in every position as you do in champions league football , or top half premiership teams. However, the flaws/ weaknesses in international teams, make it a good spectacle.

Started with an ex Glasgow Rangers player :allright

But, WTF was David Platt doing there  Is he your uncle?

I chose Platt simply for his professional attitude and approach, he's highly rated by many and scored some great goals if you look back on his career. Don't forget we are talking England's best not World.

I never got to see Duncan Edwards play but my dad always said he was the 'Gazza' of his day. There's no doubt in my mind that Gazza was up there with the very best of midfielders, able to command the game.

Miss his very much.

Having just watched that........Wow Gasgoigne's up there with the very best Englishmen I'd forgotten just how 'contemptuous' he was..........What a waste!! Someone's gonna tell me he's French now.

Thanks for that link!!

Rooney is the best player that England has ever had by a million mile but he still would not lace Messi's boots.

Messi has the potential to be as good as Maradonna.

I debated whether to enter this bun fight but after this quote I had to.

You are either too young or too much a Manchester United supporter to have made this statement. The likes of Charlton and Moore would certainly be in front of him, you could also add Gascoine for pure skill and the likes of Hurst and Greaves for striking ability.

Now note that I have not talked Rooney down, given time and application he may well be able to rest amongst the greats, but not yet IMHO :beer

Hi,

Many great players but it has to be Bobby Moore who lifted the World Cup. Will John Terry do the same this year ? :beer

he might have done

if he had kept his dick in his trousers

I most certainly do not support Man United or any other British team but I do admire Rooney.

Rooney has got real class and desperate hunger to win every game, Messi is the only player that is better than him now in the world.

Charlton and Moore would not make the current Man United team simply because fitness levels are so much higher now.

I have never quite understood why people outside of England or Scotland support teams that are resident in their own country.

Barcelona are the team that I admire most because of the crop of players they have now but I dont support them either.

Admiration for a player is no substitution for a realistic appraisal of his current standing in the all time list of "greats"

Rubbish, given the same facilities as todays overpaid players they would have easily been comparable.

'Chopper Harris say he's often asked how his team would fair against the present Chelsea team.

"We'd win 1.0"

When asked why 1.0?

He said, "Well we're all in our 60's now!"

He has the potential to become one of the greats but he's not quite there yet.

As for the "older" generation of players not being as fit as "todays" players...if one of the bigger clubs has to play two games in a week all you hear is griping and groaning about how they can't cope with such a tough schedule..ffs it's their job.

Classic!! :banana

On a sad note, I read that Gazza was picked up by old bill again recently, two days in a row. Tragic

Suplementry question; who was the greatest english goal keeper?

Another game another effective performance from the 'Boy' Nice to hear the United fans cheering Beckham. Glad I set my alarm for that one!

Best Goalkeeper?............ Don't know but it's a bit of a problem position now!

A bit of a horror show for the Arsenal keeper Fabianski! I felt a bit sorry for the kid. His first miss was a shocker, but I'm not sure what the Ref was doing with the second one. He's the same guy who let Henri play handball against Ireland. 1luv
