The owner of the broadcasting rights pays a lump sum to FIFA.

They try to recoup this plus make a profit by sub-licensing it to TV stations (Lump sums plus a share of advertisement), sponsorship money (Chang beer) and public broadcasting rights.

 

In Music it is different. Here (with music) the ownership companies usually make reciprocal deals with each other, concerning the rights. Bruce Springsteen gets as much from Thailand as a Thai composer gets from public or radio broadcast in USA. There are ways of dealing with inequality in value here, but they are usually only done on larger scale rights dealings, like Movie Soundtracks, CD licensing or such.

Just before the World Cup commenced, we were visited here at Cats Corner by the Pattaya Rep of RS Company, Bangkok and his lady boss, the latter who spoke very good English.

 

The position is this -

 

THB 10,000 for each TV screen. Police cannot enforce the law alone. The company rep must request police assistance and take the lead. The police are there to prevent a breach of the peace and convey all parties to the police station for the infringement to be settled. For a first offence, RS Company will seek payment of THB 100,000.

 

For all you upstanding and law-abiding bar owners (like MM), those of you who want to purchase a licence should ring 0847-003417 which is the mobile phone of the Pattaya rep.

Because RS has the monopoly over World Cup Broadcast in Thailand. Public Internet Streaming is not licensed and therefore illegal, by paying the license fee there is a more than fair chance that RS looks the other way.

Seen quite a lot of bars showing the games. But all my customers I spoke about who show the matches paid for the licenses, most told me it was possible to strike a deal somehow, with a months worth of Chang beer thrown in, or such.

So in the normal world, your tv provider bids for the license or buys the rights to broadcast the games whereas in Thailand someone did actually pay Bt25 or so for the Thai rights and then tries to extract Bt10,000 per TV, backed up by the BiB and anyone else on the bandwagon, seemingly Chang amongst others.

 

So when Sky bid $50m (or whatever) for the rights, it is already priced into their subscription (not pay per view) and that is fine as they know roughly how many will subscribe and FIFA know roughly how much Sky will or can bid. However, in Thailand, apart from True/UBC and some peanuts from other broadcasters, there is no means of forecasting the take up and thus no way of pricing the package. The Bt10,000 is a very Thai "finger in the air" or rather "finger up the farang's bum" way of a fine rather than a disguised license. The other nice round number of Bt100,000 (so often quoted in Thailand) is just another piss take.

 

Whichever way you wrap it up, it is simply another "fuck you arsehole" or the pigs will close your bar etc. mentality so often seen in Thailand.

That may very well be the case but surely those numbers are based largely on the reselling of rights to the free to air and satellite / cable TV companies. No-one is going to make a statement to the stock exchange based on how much they can prize from a per actual TV scamming Bt10,000 selling the "rights" to bars in Pattaya and such like. True/UBC will have paid the lion's share I'll guess and that has been factored into their costs, which to my knowledge, has not raised the subscription package rates. What this scam is is to charge people again for non existent licenses when they those paying have already paid through their normal subscription (save for the domestic / business issue, which True have never really cared about).

 

Is the Marriott paying Bt10,000 for all their 500 TVs ? I think not !

Why do you continue to say "scam"? This operation is the same as in all developed countries and increasing numbers of developing ones. It's legal, it's international law, it's national law. No matter how you hate it, it's not a scam any more than the sale of Microsoft Windows or the sale of cheap and expensive airline tickets for the same flight. It's business. Not only that but if you consider that 700 million baht for a moment, you'll be able to see how totally insignificant Pattaya bars are in the overall scheme and why RS gives them the amount of respect as they do with that (alleged) crummy little one-man operation. ("Alleged" because I haven't a clue what is ACTUALLY happening in collecting fees from Pattaya bars, only what is alleged in these threads.)

I don't know. But you could ask, and I bet it is as easy to find out. I would GUESS that Marriott is paying twice, once a total for in-room screens, and then again based on "walk-in" restaurant and bar screens, and I'd guess it's way more than 10,000 baht total -- but I don't know and definitely don't care that far down the food chain.

I just got back from the states tonight. I've been away during the entire WC so far. I had a chance to talk to my manager, Moulie, and she passed on some interesting information.

 

Apparently Chang is no longer providing licenses. I have no idea why.

 

Contacting RS directly, they say that their license fee is dependent on the size of the TV. The prices vary from 2000b to 4000b, from small screen to projection TVs. There is no 10000b fee per TV...at least, not now.

 

Singha contacted her and offered to license for the WC for 5000b for each TV.

 

I leave it to you to guess what her answer was.

 

After being up 36 hours, I might have gotten a few details wrong, but that was the gist of what I think I heard.

Just an addendum to this thread.

 

RS is now selling rights to watch the FIFA World Cup for 3000THB, regardless of how many seats or TVs are in the bar.

 

We just got our license, which is prominently displayed on our front door, just in time for the America and England Group C final matches.

 

Consequently, we will be showing the rest of the games in the series.
