What is the best rain protection for the rainy season?

Hi, I'm going to be in Pattaya from the last week in October, and I was wondering what wet weather gear I should have for those heavy downpours? Is a rain poncho enough? Thanks!

Yes a poncho is OK and so is carrying an umbrella but the regular rainy season will be over by the time you arrive.

My advice is that a poncho is a bad idea !

Don't forget that even if there is rain it's still very warm here...

Inside a poncho will quickly be the same as inside a sauna !

I don't carry rain gear around, because I always forget it when it stops raining.

 

But, when it rains, I just pop into 7-11 or Family Mart style places and buy a rain cover for 39THB or so. It goes over your head and covers your body down to your knees.

 

When it stops raining, leave it, keep it, or toss it. I guess that makes me an LDOP.

Good to know about the rain covers, MM, I'd hoped there would be something like that around.

Yes, Sinclair, I'd hoped my timing for the holiday would avoid the worst of it. I want to actually see a fair bit of the tourist attractions, not just of the two legged kind, and was hoping not to get too badly soaked.

So it looks like having a collapsible umbrella and a rain cover in my bag would be the best idea then.

The worst thing you have to worry about is what comes UP from the drains when the streets flood !

 

This "soup" can ruin a pair of shoes and trousers.

 

At least what is falling on your head is relatively clean.

 

The rain is mostly vertical, so an umbrella and walking slowly works for me.

Thai massage is good and I seem to have more on my trips during the wet season. No doubt I'll be having a few early in July. Having said that the wet season in Pattaya is not as bad as it is further south e.g. Phuket where the rain can be a lot heavier and more prolonged.

For me, an umbrella suffices. Also, think about your footwear. In a downpour, some streets can be more than a foot deep. You are going to get wet. If its threatening, I wear rubber shoes of some kind. Best advice, step into a bar or a massage shop and wait it out.

Loads of people appear with umbrellas for sale. I was offered one for something like 100/ 200 bht while the thais that walked up were offered them at a lot less
