Think this might be in the wrong section.....But.....Tickets from the States are crazy at the moment and I can't justify spending $10k for a two week holiday...I gotta buy four tickets!!! needless to say we'll be spending a long cold winter freezing in the snow! :thumbup

There have been lots of threads and posts about exchange rates and people moaning. Lots said get over it, stop moaning etc etc. However it is a huge issue. My hourly rate has only dropped an £1 or 2 in the last 18 months but the exchange rate has really curbed my spending in Thailand. I have said it before that many Brits work on appriox a £100 a day budget which all in for a 2 week trip comes to approx 2200 - 2500 pounds. However a £100 a day now and you are constantly thinking of money. Yes it can be done but not like before. I have never expect the Thai's to compensate for the weak pound or dollar but I do find for what I like to do my £ goes a lot further in Angeles City and a result I will spend a higher proportion of next trip there. So the answer is YES the exchange rate matters a hell of lot.

The exchange rate could be a killer for Pattaya and barowners/restaraunt owners.I have been very lucky, lived here for 7 years and had 3 yerars of 74.9/2 years of 69.9 and the rest various exchanges so cant grumble. What i do know is the inflation is the same overall in the uk and i budgeted a 5% inflation per year for the next 25 years from retiring at 50,so i am on target so far.Yes,over the 7 years i could have been nearly 50% worse off but with investing cash when the thai baht was weak has helped me no end

I had a month this year in LOS and the cost of everything from food to pussy

seemed so much higher than ever before, even though I can remember a 39bt to the UK pound

in 1996.

Not a lot better here in Europe, the pound is up and down against the Euro so

its just a case of waiting and hoping things get better.

Too true mate. The days of spending 10 K baht night after night definitely belongs to the past with the current exchange rate. The Euro used to be approximately 50 baht and is now 40 baht. So 10 K used to cost me 200 Euro and now its 250 Euro. Makes a big difference when you're out for three weeks especially when spending a lot of time in Bangkok, where I easily spend 10 K on a good night out. Add to that the increased flight prices and Thailand has become a very expensive holiday destination for those that like to drink and party.

If you're out in March I might squeeze a weekend in AC in :allright

As has been states, Australians have faired well with the exchange rate and it has barely changed in the 5 years I have been going to Thailand, having said that our interest rates are just stupid at the moment meaning less money in your pocket.

But again it's all about balances and airfares are getting cheaper and cheaper, thanks to competition from Air Asia and Tiger. Today, Jetstar are offering flights from Melbourne to Bangkok for $279, plus $20 for your luggage, so if the return fare is the same, that's $600 return. That is cheap.

For me, living at the top of Australia, the nearest part of Australia to the rest of the world, but with the poorest options in terms of travel, Air Asia has just made my trips to Thailand even cheaper. I can now fly from Darwin to Bali, and Bali-Bangkok Bangkok to Udon Thani, cheaply, and more importantly in one day! Previously it meant an overnight stop in Singapore which, without whoring, amounts to at least 100 bucks and wastes a day.

I must say, since I took myself of the mongering market I have found my lifestyle in Thailand cheap, maybe it's just Udon Thani? I eat where my GF takes me, and eat well, and both the beer and food are cheap. I stay at a newish place with massive rooms for 480 B/night, I hire a 4WD from a local firm for 1000B/day.

Yes, some things are dear in Thailand, I haven't been to Pattaya for over 2 years now, but have been through Bangkok and it's expensive, but for me, Udon Thani is still a cheap place for me to spend a few weeks.

You are looking at this the wrong way.

The worthless paper currencies of the debt fuelled Welfare Nanny States spent a short time at delusional levels while the debt fuelled standard of living con-job was perpetrated on the rest of the world.

The Thai tourist industry intellegently took advantage of the Nanny Staters who spent their money like confetti during this mirage by jacking up the prices.

Welfare Nanny State currencies are simply headed to the 3rd World levels where they belong.

The Welfare Nanny States economic Depression is just the mechanism by which they debased their economies to permanent 3rd world status.

This state of affairs is now permanent so adjust your thinking accordingly or suffer the consequences.

"make more money"

Unfortunately a lot of peope are not in the fortunate position where this is an option. anyone retired would find it difficult to increase their income and those who are self employed may find it hard to increase their weekly hours if the work is not available.

I think Darwin had something to say about this

No one said youd be spoon fed more money

adapt & survive

.

That's it.

Asians work harder, pay less taxes and freeloaders don't have a right to live off the hard work of others.

The direction of exchange rates is then quite obvious to understand unless you had the misfortune to be educated in a Nanny Welfare State government school by an incompetent, left wing, feminazi teacher.

OK, let's talk education. Where did you learn to capatalise phrases like nanny welfare state? Not required, not correct, wrong.

Now Asians working harder-where? In the UK perhaps, in Asia no.

Pay less taxes, yes, get fuck all, yes. Even the scummiest stupid fuck in the west is taken care of because in the west we recognise they are people, even if they are scum and filth, in Asia nobody gives a flying fuck.

Your understanding of economics is clearly a lot less than mine, and mine is lacking, but I know that things will come right again.

You may have made Thailand your home, and may like the lack of regulation, but that doesn't mean your views about the west are correct and are to be aired at every opportunity just to say " fuck you, I live here".

Perhaps it could be regarded as an official agency......? :clueless

Perhaps in Singapore, Japan, Korea, India.... they seem to be pressed there, even on an education level.

Pay less taxes, yes, get fuck all, yes. Even the scummiest stupid fuck in the west is taken care of because in the west we recognise they are people, even if they are scum and filth, in Asia nobody gives a flying fuck.

But are they worthy people.... ? Is it right to take from those who work to support these who do not wish to? In Asia the family system takes more responsibility, in Europe the welfare state has eliminated responsibility from people, and given it to government... but they have to take from the people.

Your understanding of economics is clearly a lot less than mine, and mine is lacking, but I know that things will come right again.

I admire your optimism, in your lifetime?

You may have made Thailand your home, and may like the lack of regulation, but that doesn't mean your views about the west are correct and are to be aired at every opportunity just to say " fuck you, I live here".

What is wrong with a person of western origin, who has retired to Thailand, airing his views? Those living in these places are somewhat oblivious to the gradual changes going on around them, swayed by a liberal media, and aligned to the 'way of thinking' propelled by goverrnment and media. The very way the Australians are being blamed for a boatload of illegals suffering in a storm, while trying to get to Australia. I don't say 'fuck you' I say 'wake up'!

Baan Worachan appartments on the ringroad,

http://www.udonmap.com/udonthaniforum/baan...sor-t14426.html

Their website is down but this is their entry on Udon Map. Best to book because they are very popular with Thai business men.Not much English spoken, get a Thai to book for you. The rooms are enormous, spotlessly clean, nice bathroom.

I use Lek car rentals: http://www.lekcarrentaludonthani.com/

They may be a wee bit dearer than other places but they have the guaranteed insurance and will deliver the car to you when and where you want.

Hope that all helps.

I'll be in Udon the first 2 weeks of Feb.

Cheers

Just checked on that link they have an email addy, if no Thai spoken maybe a good way to go.

P

Having said all of that, if you are not good with Udon Thani, staying at The Irish Clock is a good bet, it's in the centre of town, nice pub and by all acounts great rooms.

http://www.irishclock.com/rooms.html

Dearer there at 850 B/night.

Being from the US I haven't really seen much of a down turn in my exchange rate. My first trip to LOS three years ago saw an exchange rate of 33 baht to the US dollar. My last trip (just returned home about a week ago) had the dollar going for 29.5 baht. A slight drop of about 4 baht to the dollar. A pittance as far as I am concerned.

I still came in under budget on this last trip, and I didn't skimp. I had a good time, bought lots of clothing, toys and such and enjoyed myself.

The Nanny Welfare State has passed it's used by date and will soon join Communism in humanity's garbage bin of naive, failed social engineering experiments.

Don't forget to smile each week when you so generously hand over 50% of your wages so the freeloading welfare sponges can piss it up against the wall, inject it into their arms or gamble it away.

Ps Is their any lower response to an accurate post than nit picking the spelling or grammar?
