Hotel Checkout - Is this the norm?

Recommended Posts

Just got back from taking the family to Areca Lodge.

This is the 3rd time I have stayed here and as always I find it nice, family friendly and reasonably located

more so now they have proper crossing points on the 2nd road.

I was however a little annoyed this time with the check out procedure. We had a 4.30am departure for a

8am BKK Flight.

So as I was settling the bill which was almost 20,000bht the cashier said there was a towel missing from the room

and she could not settle the bill till it was located. Eventually the towel was located and I got in my cab annoyed that

we spent 15 mins discussing a 50bht towel after taking 20,000 bht from me.

This has never happened to me before here is this the norm in other hotels, or did I just get poor service?

They actually did the same to me one year re one of the glasses from the bathroom. I just paid for it. Later realised that my GF had taken it out to the pool and left it there, but it was only a few baht so not important.

I suspect that the maid is responsible for this sort of thing, and if you don't pay it may well come out of her salary. In which case it's obviously better to pay up even if it turns out to be the hotel's mistake.

If it was only 50 Baht why did you even bother to argue?

Some falang twat nearly mowed me down there as I crossed last night.

I checked out of there this am... no such incidence although they did take their time. There is a long list of room items in the room with the price in the event of damage or theft. , they even wanted payment plus a deposit up front. A sad fact of the times... probably those English towel and q-tip stealers who have 1500 tiny bottles of shampoo at home. (Just read the above post, apparently Oz guys steal towels too..:chogdee )

Had similar shit at a Korat hotel I regularly used, some stain on the hotel towel and they were planning to charge me 1000 baht and keep the original. Fortunately I was not in a hurry and showed them how shaving gel can be rinsed off and that place gets the jacko fuck off now.

Still rate the Areca as quite good though....

Where was the towel by the way....

That is the norm I think that if something is missing or broken you have to pay or the Maid might be charged!

I have had broken glasses and dirty towels and sheets that i had to pay for when checking out!

Many years ago I stayed at the old Siri Hotel in Korat and after checking out and arriving at my next destination I noticed that I have forgotten to give back my room-key! :clueless

Being honest I put it in a thick envelope and sent it back to the hotel by post, and thought that was it!

A year later I was back at Siri Hotel again and hardly had I stepped into the reception area when tha cleaning Maid that I recognised from last year came running over to me looking very upset that I forgot the key last year and that she had to pay 50 baht of her own money to make a new one!

I told her I sent it back but she said she never saw it again, so I payed her a 100 baht to make her calm down! :bow

They never forget! :grin

A mate of mine is staying at an upmarket place in Jomtien. The room info says there is a hairdryer in the room but there isn't. He enquired why. It seems that one result of the deluge of Russians is that a whole lot of things now go missing from the rooms, so now you have to ask for a hairdryer and pay a deposit if you want one.

Maybe Areca have been having similar problems and are being ultra cautious.

Yes, this is just normal procedure. Unfortunately here in Thailand we are on Thai time rather than western time where people are normally prompt and always in a hurry. I usually call the desk and tell them I am checking out now. This gets things moving faster than normal. Some problems can be avoided if you are in the room while the maid is checking that everything is there and accounted for.

I stayed at Auguest Suites both times i was in thailand and never had a problem but this time i got a tattoo on my back and it left an imprint on the top blanket. They informed me on check out that they would wash it and if the stain came out no problem but if it didn't they would charge my CC 3000 baht. Well i guess it came out since they didnt charge me. just my 2cents
