Speedboat hire to Koh Larn.

Barrief asked a simple question and I researched it for him. Is any of the advice here as recent as when I replied to his question?

 

You researched it for him and gave him a decidedly useless response.

 

8000B for a day for a speedboat that will leave and return at your convenience is nothing like what anyone who has an inkling of knowledge about "the realm of your business" would give as an answer, unless they were trying to flog a 12000b/day cruise boat by making it look like a good deal.

 

The facts are, as several have attested, that a private speedboat hire is around 3k baht a day, if you know where to look, which apparently you didn't. DJ in his post may have made a recent inquiry...he didn't say when, but if you're saying the price has gone from 3k to 8k since he was here...well, that would be surprising.

 

That's the beauty of these threads where they can actually inform, no matter how much someone tries to mask the facts, the truth will out.

 

And, I didn't threadfuck the thread. If you look carefully, the guy wants to hire a speedboat, but you're putting up pictures of your slow boat as a response. That's about as relevant as someone saying he could take the ferry to Kah Larn. The topic was about speedboat hire.

 

I'll leave the FLB stuff to another day, in order not to encourage you to threadfuck even more.

Back on topic. I am interested in what Barrief asked. He wanted a speed boat for the day. Most have seemed to assumed that he wanted to go to a beach, and have the boat wait. He didn't say that, or why he wanted the boat for the day. I on the other hand, thought that he was interested in some boating. I enjoy being on a boat much more than sitting on a beach. I have been to Koh Larn 3 times, to 3 different beaches. None of them lived up to my expectations. I grew up on the beach in southern California and am used to lots of eye candy on the beach. Okay, this is Thailand, not Calif. So far, the best beaches I have found were on Koh Samui. A bit expensive for a one day trip.

 

Here is what I would like. I would like to rent a boat for the day, and do some boating, and exploring of the islands. Do some para sailing. I'd like to check out several beaches and find one that I really like. I would also like to find for future reference, a deserted beach where 6 or 8 of us could show up with food, drinks, and a BBQ, and be by ourselves, not bothered by hawkers or someone else's music.

 

I don't mind paying for extra gas, or a higher price to cover the extra usage. Barrief if you are looking for the same thing, and wouldn't mind another couple or two along, I or we would be happy to split the cost.

That's probably a good question for a new topic, since it's asking about a boat day rather than a fast boat taxi.

 

My guess is Barry wanted to get to the beaches on Koh Larn by speedboat. Something to do with his desire to spend a day on Koh Larn and asking which beach would be good.

Beach Road hires are 2000-2500 Baht for the ride to Koh Larn, then 800-1000 Baht per hour for getting dragged behind the boat. They normally put you in a friend's boat with a smaller motor to save gas.

 

The 8000 Baht trips normally include water sports, drinks and BBQ.

 

It is not 8K flat as they ask for another 800-1000 Baht per person.

 

As with most things in Thailand, try to negotiate.

LOL, I know Randy and thanks for the recommendation. The information was for those that hadn't been on my boat, unlike you.

 

The 4500B price was sound inlogic too : think about it. They take 15 on this particular boat at 300B each. A full boat would be 4500B so that's what they asked for. For Thais it's amazingly sound logic - albeit lacking in any discount.

 

There are different sized speedboats around as well, some of them would only hold 10 people at max and using the same logic a fee of 3000B could be achieved I'm sure.

The quote I got was to take you from beach to beach. I asked about them waiting for the "group" but it was more of a "you tell us how long stay and someone come back take you next beach" answer.

 

Remember that these "boats" have no fishing gear, snorkelling, reasonable toilet facilities etc so I wasn't shocked at the 8000B figure. If that's your thing and you spread it over 15 people it's under 550B per person.

 

My boat on the other hand has multiple decks, all equipment supplied, cooking facilities and even a hot water shower, not to mention the falang toilet. For 15 people the cost is 800B per person (for the Koh Larn area) and that includes all equipment for fishing and snorkelling , including bait. We even cook your catch for free.

 

We're licensed for 40 including staff (but only take 35 passengers) so that's under 350B per person for a large group. There are also 2 private bedrooms and 3 decks, 2 undercover with individual sound systems on 2 decks.

 

It depends entirely on the experience you want .... did I mention the LICENSED bar (only one in Pattaya area on a moving boat ) and we have our own jet-ski (don't know of anyone else that has that) . There's even a karaoke unit for the brave (or very drunk)

Never took one over to Koh Larn , but at the end of the day you can find one for return @1,000 baht. Skippers lounging around the beach food stalls.

Anybody rented a private boat for the day and then just refilled the tank to make sure to pay exactly what has been spent ?

Jamie, in his most recent trip report, said he rented a speedboat to take him to Ko Larn for 2000 after being initially asked for 2500. He rode out alone, and returned with half-dozen people after a day at the beach.

 

I've never heard of anyone refilling the tank. I don't know where they refill or if it is convenient, not do I see the value in doing that. They usually don't charge directly for gas unless you change the agreed upon destination, that is, the gas is included in the price they agree to.

 

I certainly hope Jamie's recent experience puts paid to the idea that they all charge by the person, require the boat to fill to it's maximum capacity, and that there are no other, more convenient options. Certainly for a small group, paying for the boat rental itself and hiring the boat privately is preferable....and it's usually between 2k and 3k to do it to Ko Larn.

I hired a Speedboat with some friends to take us to Koh Phai which is a little farther than koh larn and much more private.

cost was 6000 or 6500 baht can't remember, don't recall trying to haggle, we had the boat to ourselves and the driver who took us to both sides of

the island. we left i think around 8am return was about 4pm i think.

 

I going to try and charter the Edina when i'm back in January and give the party boat a try

Not meanign to go off topic , but earlier in the year - speedboat brought felang to the ambulance at bali high - broken arm - whilst on board the speedboat - these things bounce about and can be fun -- the felang didnt seem to be having fun - i'll stick to ferry.

Hi Shambley, sorry for the delay in response, I'm up in Udon at the moment as the boat is having its annual dry-dock experience.

 

A "day" for us is 8am > 5pm or 7pm > 6am. If we dont have bookings for day + night we can be a little bit flexible but generally those are the times

 

We have BBQ's on board and can arrange for a beach BBQ if you want.
