Just to let everybody knows that most DVD copies you buy from the streets don't work.

They are scratched, dirty, probably been used 100 times before they are sold.

Best advice is to check them for scratches before you buy them.

Do not believe the guy if he tells you that they are copied from the original version, or if he tells you that they are DVD9 formats which is the better quality ones, as they do not produce these DVD's yet.

I paid 150-180 Baht each in Pattaya, but in bangkok I used to pay 100 baht each.

I got mine off a guy at the corner of soi yamoto, they were all good quality,if you ask the motorbike guys on the corner they will let you know where he is...

I bought loads (100B each) just off South Pattaya market and they have all worked perfectly.  I guess some supliers are good and some are not good, the trick is to work out which is which :)

I bought dvds from  a vendor in walking street. Quality varied from good to bad with one classic shot of someone rising from their seat and their exit stage right showing on the movie.

I now only buy from under the smiley face on second rd.

I love the English subtitles on some of them.

My favourite is American Pie 2 which I bought a few years ago. Filmed in a theater, then some clever guy is adding the subtitles. My copy has a 4 minutes gap in a conversation and then suddenly there's something he understands... It was "yes".

Lately, I've been buying DVD9 in BKK. Recommended!!!

You get all the extras etc.

I bought 3 this last trip and have one {Cold Mountain} which freezes up 3/4 of the way through the show, but the other 2 are okay.  It's hit-n-miss with some of them.  Last year I bought 4 and they all did the skip/freeze thing in my DVD player..

I've found that a lot is dependent on the player.  I have a pretty cheap DVD player and only about 75% of my pirated movies play all the way through on it.  However, on a good player 95% work fine.

Likewise I have some DVD's that will work on my laptop, but not my bookshelf DVD player or vice versa.

I agree with VoxVadar, i have two DVD players, one freezes up on some copies and one doesnt, the one that freezes up also struggles with long films on one disk such as Scarface on original DVDs as well.  Always worth going for a mid range player or above......

I also had one the same as you Landy2A, in matrix about halfway through a loud cough is heard then a family of four walk towards the camera! rest of it is fine though....

I have found the VCD`s in the bigger Big C (just outta the resort) great value, got 10 for 300bhat, mainly older titles but complete originals, watch you dont get Thai dubbed films though.... but not all DVD players will play VCD`s.  :(

Only player i have found that will play anything is the Phillips multi-regional range..... usually about 90 pound sterling plus though...  but all DVD`s, DVD-R, VCD`s, CD-R, Kodak pic cds, MP3 etc etc  alll work superb... guess it all comes down to you get what you pay for!!!

G,

I purchased a stack of western DVDs dubbed in Thai, with actors I have never heard of and the most pitifull story lines. I bought them from big C in north Pattaya. These were legit and cost between 19 and 29 Baht. Made a big hit with the then GF as I left my DVD with her between visits. The more inane the more she loved them.

I have about 10 Dvd's from LOS, for the most part they all work fine except the movie 1 Hour Photo only came in French.  I have the movie 8 Mile that has lettering on it and part of one scene was missing.  If you want the best quality, have a thai cuttie help you buy them, they know where the good markets are.

cheers

I think you'll find these are actually VCD's, pity there dubbed as they'd be top value otherwise.

Where's the best place in town for DVD9 these days.

Skipping Bangkok next trip and will buy them all in Pattaya.

Still the shops on 2nd road close to the South Pattaya road?

And, best place for a portable DVD with screen...?

Thanks!

Out of the 50 DVD's I bought , 20 had DVD9 on them, but when I checked them up they were under 4.7 Giga which means they are not. In fact they are single layered or DVD5.

So far I have not heard that DVD9's copies can be produced.

As for the quality, they use good shrinking programs.

On last trip I purchased 5 DVD's.  Three XXX and two regular movies.  The XXX were excellent quality, the movies were crap.  Got from Beach St.

Bought 4 DVD's, 3 X-rated, plus Pirates of the Carribean on the Market Soi Bukao (spelling???) at 120 baht, also 2 CDs Walking Street 100 a peace.

All were excellent quality.

Would have bought more, but was worried about US Customs.

I've heard that the DVD9 are made in a Chinese plant.

Makes sense, you need a bit more than a burner to make them.

People talk nice about the Fortune hotel mall in Bangkok when it comes to DVD9. Will take a look next time.

Why even bother buying them? Get yourself a broadband internet connection at home and download all your movies. Every format is out there waiting to be downloaded, DivX, Xvid, VCD, SVCD, KVCD, DVD, plus all the others I've forgotten.

Free to download plus no hassle going through customs!

I've got hundreds of movies downloaded, the only trouble is finding the time to watch them all.

I bought 10 DVD,s on my last visit 7 were just about ok, the other 3 and most recent release were crap quality, will not buy in Pattaya again.

On my travels China is the best place for DVD,s and cheaper than Pattaya.

Cheers

Do you know any good sites to download these movies?

Would really appreciate it.
