Last week, I was in BKK, Soi Cowboy, and the police closed the bars at 1am. We went down to Nana, and it was closed too. Then to Insomnia and it was closed too. Word was, they had closed all the late night places by 1-3am.

Tonight, there was a police closure of the bars/gogos and discos at 3am. I heard second hand that they will be enforcing a 2:30am closure as of tomorrow.

My theory is this is because of the public reaction to the topless dancing girls at Silom during Songkran.

Were any other areas affected? Sois 7/8, LK Metro etc, by this early closure?

Nah, that blew over, and the nightlife was never blamed for it anyhow. More likely it's an approaching election, in which the old "Mr Clean" Purachai Piemsombun is going to run as, well, Mr Clean. His clean-up of nightlife in the early Thaksin days was actually quite popular among folks who vote, polled VERY well, and no one is going to run up against him on this issue. Expect more of this sort of thing over the next month and then, if "we" lose the election, for a long time to come.

Purachai is running as the Thai version of an independent, then he'll try to horn in to the coalition after the election - presuming there's to be a coalition which is almost certain.

I'm open to any reasonable theories.

Purachai is in the government now (again)?

No. Purachai has been out of touch for quite some time (mostly in New Zealand) but he is fit, tanned, rested and has announced he is running in the coming election. He has had a LOT of front page out of it, how when he's elected he will clean up the filth, etc. Interestingly, never mentioned the Topless Trio. For him, it has always been all about the nightclub circuit, foreign areas included but not villainised.

So, you're theory is that this is the ruling government's attempt to show they can be tough on the nightclub circuit, in order to take away his platform?

That's possible, but seems more far fetched than the reaction to teenagers "misbehaving" in a very public manner.

Whatever it is, the authorities are making themselves felt, to the inconvenience of the denizens of the nightlife (again).

May it pass quickly!

I don't think it's the government. Remember - Purachai was in charge of the police last time round. If I'm an occifer, I am not going to take chances that he'll be there again. Which he WELL might be. It doesn't take the government to order a "crackdown", eh?

When are these elections? I hope they won't interfere with my next trip.

Why, you want to be sure on the right day in order to vote?

The exact day is not set. Very late June or very early July. Elections are on Sunday by tradition.

1am is unreasonable but bars/clubs shutting at 3am is reasonable, unless one goes out at midnight,or some people who work in bars

There's a lot of BKK Thais in town for the Mayday weekend, closing places early so that they are not disturbed by drunken farang revellers returning to the hotels and Condos drunk and noisy at all hours of the morning :hairout :thumbup

I was cut off in my prime at about 3:00am this morning!

I covered a lot of ground trying to find another watering hole that was still open but to no avail!

It would seem they shut the lot :banghead

And I heard they are going to be doing it again tonight.

I'm not a fortune teller for mid-May, but I do suggest you just steel yourself to the possibility that Thai authorities will obey the laws not too far down the road. This is a dead-easy campaign for politicians to jump on at election time.

SO FAR, this isn't a public campaign, which is to our advantage. When-not-if it hits the media, we're on the losing side.

Simple guys just go out earlier in the night :-)

I know of at least one gogo (Sweethearts) that is opening an hour earlier until this blows over. There are probably more to come.

And they all only wanted 1000 baht and they fell in love with you and wanted to stay forever for free etc.,etc. Yes, we have heard and know about it. I did like some of your last pics. though, so it was worth it listening to the old refrain again. I especially like the part where the dancer confides in you that the Mamasan only asks the LDOPS a high price but she will go with you for less. The girl validates your claims every time. What a coincidence!

I realize this a bit of a thread fuck. For guys like Gabor who come to Pattaya frequently and have a long stay. There's way more truth to what you post then you realize. When the mamasan and the girls get to know you. One pays less then the going tourist rate.
