You might get a deal if the plane is underbooked.... but mostly booking in advance is better and you get the certainty of being able to travel.

Of the European Carriers Lufthansa and Turkish are cheapest (Saigon). Hanoi is shown more expensive with Thai and Vietnam Airways.

There is always Air Asia of course for about 4500THB. plus $2 to use the toilet + $3 for tissue and an environmental charge of $1.50 for the water required to flush it.

Don't forget you'll need a visa.

Whatever else check this one out. Whereas you can in most cases be granted a 30 day visa on arrival in Thailand I believe that you are rrequired in almost all cases to have a Viet visa before arrival. This can be a costly error. Other than that there are all sorts of options to fly, drive or sail into Vietnam!

Nam visas are quite expensive and needed before you fly. I find Air asia very inexpensive once I am in Asia. I suppose where in Nam depends on what you are looking for. I didn't like Hanoi and was really disappointed by the long drive to get to Halong bay only to see the pollution that surrounds it.Ho Chi min city was much better and the short excursion to Nha Trang a very inexpensive flight of $60 each way. The sailing club, Vinpearl island and The booze cruize bar were the specials. We stayed at the light hotel... amazing and inexpensive. The Yusaka disco was to be seen to be believed. Enjoy

I'm off to Vietnam in a few days.

Yes you'll need a visa and a pre approval letter which you can do online, the link below is the cheapest I've found:

http://www.smiletravelvietnam.com/travelvietnam/vietnamVisa.aspx

You'll need to print it out and present it to customs when you arrive, then pay $US50 for visa on arrival, a little bit of messing around but saves sending your passport to the Embassy and all the messing around that entails.

Hope that helps

$21 and a $25 stamping fee on arrival using an online service which is quite simple:

Might be worth the fast track on arrival as well as I can imagine Hanoi or HCM City / Saigon airports.
