I think it depends on the sport, the medal, and the national environment.

In the USA, I can't think there'd be great acclaim for a gold medal winner in badminton or 10m airgun.

As I said, no gold available in the next round as there is no guarantee that either wins a gold in the next round just a guaranteed silver.

 

Your making it sound bigger than what it is. It's the semifinals and the looser of the next round may end up in 4th not playing for the gold at all.
