The Olympics, London 2012 - A time to be proud

Recommended Posts

maybe you need to rethink that a semifinal winner moves on to play for the gold. NO GOLD SEMIFINAL.

As I said, no gold available in the next round as there is no guarantee that either wins a gold in the next round just a guaranteed silver.

Your making it sound bigger than what it is. It's the semifinals and the looser of the next round may end up in 4th not playing for the gold at all.

The "GOLD SEMIFINAL" sounds like Yankspeak similar to the Super Bowl champions being "world champions."

I have a mate who got a silver for GB in swimming in the "runners-up" event at the Seoul Olympics. It seems there are separate events for people who don't make it to the final. Do they still have those?

This girlie has most of my hobbies (sleeping, eating and pretending are my favourites), maybe I should start a sport for Rio - I must be a closet sportsman.

I think London should be proud to host 2012 Olympics but I think they should be embarrassed about opening ceremony as I thought it was very boring just my honest opinion!!!!!

Oops! Really bad news for the French Cycling Team ....       Olympic Cycling - French Team Quarters Raided     By Karolos Grohmann and Paul Casciato LONDON, July 29 | Sun Jul 29, 2012 11:52am

Why is it a "bah humbug" and totally unnecessary pissing on someone's parade by me voicing my opinion? I think London should be proud to host the 2012 Olympics!!!!! I just did not like the opening

There's not much about the events that I haven't liked but whoever had the idea to employ moronic DJ's to supplement world class athletics' events needs shooting. It might work between sets at the beach volleball etc, but as a distraction when athletes are actually competing is a disgrace. I'm sure when Mo Farrah is running his 10k m tonight, he doesn't need the assistance of Bowie, Morrisey or some techno crap to help him along. The accompanying twaddle and music to last night's women's 10k was an absolute disgrace and an insult to the world class athletes who were competing.

Rant over. Back to the sport.

Quick one for the Yanks ... Is there any reason why Michael Johnson is part of the BBC's commentary team rather than a US network? It's not just the Olympics, he's been a regular for years and years and is very good in his role.

I do not believe he is ostracized here by the networks. NBC seems to have their core guys and some media darlings like Brandi Chastain doing color commentary. You often see older athletes still doing commentary (Dwight Stone in track and field - I think he is ABC) for instance. A lot of younger viewers probably never heard of a lot of these people. Mary Lou Retton also comes to mind. Chris Evert and John McEnroe still do Wimbledon and may have done the Olympics but I did not see the tennis.

It is a good old boy and girl system.

I know some sports like fencing, skeet shooting and other sports of less glamourous nature are actually called by commentators in the studio in New York. They don't have actual people in London to do all the sports in person.

Trust the footballers to spoil the party as usual. The jinx continues although that doesn't take the shine off the most successful day ever for British athletics and our most successful day at the Olympics for over a century apparently. This is just fantastic and considering our population in comparison to China and the USA it is truly remarkable. :bow :clap2 :bow :clap2 :bow :clap2 :bow :clap2 :bow :clap2 :bow :clap2 :bow :clap2 :bow :clap2 :bow

If you take the swimming medals out of the equation Team GB would actually be ahead of the USA - 30 of their 54 medals up until now have come from the swimming events.

Well done TeamGB... let's keep it going!!!! :clap2:

Haha.

If you take sports where you get to sit down (rowing and cycling) out of GBs medals you'd have how many?

It's all very nice for you to be proud of GBs position in the medal hunt, but putting these silly conditions on the results is just ... silly.

I predicted a GB win in the penalty shoot out on the roulette wheel theory...after 6 straight reds you think put your (generic) house on black. I was wrong to equate shoot outs to having anything to do with luck....... Now another generation has been damaged.

......and I'll keep my mouth shut in future and accept full responsibility.

Then GB needs to focus harder on swimming. Some of those 30 could have been had.

Swimming is a worthy sport.

Thailand doesn't have any gold medalist this year, and I doubt the single silver medallist can do anything other than scary ghost movies.

The TGF informs me she has already received 17 million baht sponsorship and more will follow.

So a 'share' in What's up may be obtainable.

Anyone who gets a gold for LOS will get 10 million from the guy who owns the Green Tea company.

Third in the medal table now! :thumbup

Now, if the USA can just edge past those pesky Chinese.

Hi Siam Sam, MM, ...

I can share your enthusiasm for these great games, but about medals just a small reminder that not all countries have same medals' chances in Olympics Games. The more athletes you bring in as many sports as possible, and the more you can expect medals.

Organizing country always has more athletes than usually. In these London games GBR is the biggest delegation ever (564). USA is not far (539), but China have nearly 200 athletes less than GBR (384) and European countries average around 300 (half of GBR)...

Can be fair to look too at some pondered results, such as the following one who can give ranking function of the population or team size of counties:

Olympics 2012: the alternative medals tables : http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/datablog/2012/jul/30/olympics-2012-alternative-medal-table

First by Population ponderation : New Zealand

First by Delegation size ponderation : China

Talking of 'ponderisation'..... Choosing between the best of 2 evils...... It's a bit like telling a Daily Mail reader that, 'paedophiles are the natural food of illegal immigrants...'

I'm faced with 'ponderisation' daily...........

......I never support Serena......and I never support the lady 'grunters' on court . So faced with a choice between the two and after due ponder....switched channels and watched another event.

Watching the team 'Fencing finals' betwen China and Korea......Don't want China to overtake The USA at the top of the medals table ....but don't want Korea to over-haul team GB either. Another deep ponder and bugger it if I didn't find myself cheering on China!!

These olympics.........

Great viewing.

Sounds reasonable going solely by numbers, but, the athletes who win still have to be better than 98% of the field. Given, on occasion it might simply have to be at 'that moment', but simply being there doesn't give an athlete much better odds to medal unless there are only 2 other competitors.
