I have always felt book at least a month in advance, but I personally didn't want to go more than 3 in advance.

Circumstances change and refunds are tough to get.

I have no real data to say how that affects pricing, except leave it too late and it gets more expensive. Perhaps someone in the industry can advise.

I've found that the Middle-Eastern airlines that I tend to use seem to drop prices or initiate special offers around September in the UK; however, I almost exclusively book through the airlines own websites nowadays.

If you live in UK , get yourself registered with online company " Sky Scanner " they will give you regular updates for your chosen route/destination/dates of travel by E-mail nearly every day and you may save yourself quite a few ££££££££ . I have tried a few and this company seems to be the best .

The day before I flew to Thailand in April I was pricing up flights for a trip in October and in the afternoon the flights I wanted (MAN- BKK with Emirates) were coming up at £1800 for 3 of us.... by midnight the price had shot up to £2550 for 3. The lowest I have seen it since was £2250 for the flights I wanted.

Started looking at alternatives and managed to get NCL-BKK with Emirates for £1860 for the 3 of us with the flight times I wanted - the only downside being that car parking at Newcastle airport is nearly double what I pay at Manchester.

I start scanning around 3-4 months prior. I know what i have paid over the years and if I can can match or get close I grab it. Waiting too long tends to restrict dates. So far I have yet to find a lower price after i booked. In most cases, it is several hundred more. May just be luck though....or I stop looking. Lol.

Well, I've just checked my dates for October and the Emirates prices haven't dropped on those dates! Looks like I made the right move booking when I did.

My general rule is if you see a flight at a decent price with a good airline and good times book it, you will regret not doing it if you keep looking.

Glyn.

I agree with this strategy. I've booked a few months in advance, but mostly a few weeks before and sometimes as late a few days before as I really didn't want to go back to the States :(

Their prices on their own website seem to be up and down like the proverbial "whores drawers" recently. I have been making a few 1st Class bookings with them and quotes/take ups have varied from £3.5 K up to £4.8 K. from Glasgow or Manchester. The price even changed mid booking on one occasion ( Failed booking message and request to re-try) as it was a £100 drop I carried on!

I was wondering whether that was based on the appreciating £, although I haven't seen swings as large as you?

I use Kayak.com and set it to send me daily reminders of the prices. When the prices start to go up, I buy.
