Do Thai 747s have IFE now?

Recommended Posts

Flying Thai next week and interested to know if those old crates have been upgraded yet? it sure can be boring without having something to keep the mind occupied.

Yes all old 747's except 1 are upgraded at this time. Seat pitch is good compared to their newer 777's 200 and 300

Yep,they have been spruced up.

The IFE boxes are fixed vertically to one leg of the seat in front so you can still sprawl out and get your feet underneath.

I had a central aisle seat in March from LHR - BKK on a 747 and I could only get one foot in the space, the other foot I had to put in aisle up against the seat in front to avoid people stepping on it. I'm 5.8 and take a size 7 1/2 shoe.

Only some of the economy seats have good seat pitch - many are 32-33 inches.

well I have a window seat, so I would hope that doesn`t effect me.

I always turn up early for my flight and at check in I ask if they can change my seat for one with extra legroom. More often than not they will give me a seat by the exit doors, so no seat in front of you and you can stretch out. It's worth hanging around the airport for a couple of extra hours if it means I get more legroom for a 11 hour flight!

For budget carriers, you pay for those seats, but for say Thai, can't you select your seat on-line?

It would save all that time at the airport which I don't need on top of an 11 hour flight.

They dont release those seats for pre-booking as far as I recall, as they cannot allocate them to children or the infirm. if there is an emergency then the people in those seats need to help release the doors. if you pay the budget price, ie not accruing airmiles, then they wont give you an option on the exit seats.

This is only based on my experiences, so dont quote me as gospel!

Bulkheads don't give.

Well I have a recollection of a pop up once when I was selecting my seat that asked me those questions, but point taken. The emergency exit seats in Biz class, upstairs with KLM were my favourite for a long time. I am still unpersuaded that arriving at the airport 3 hours early on the off-chance that I might get one of those prized seats is worth it. I don't use Thai so normally those seats were occupied by Bangkok by someone who got on in Sydney/Vietnam/Taiwan etc.

These days I use Etihad or Qatar and they seem to let me choose, although I sometimes think the choice is limited early!

officially they cannot release those seats as they have to check whether you are able to help in emergencies.

Go early to catch them.
