Yes and maybe take a few 1000 away from the monopoly that the BKK/Pattaya has on this place.

Thanks for posting that information Mick.

Nothing wrong with a bit more competition in town, hopefully bringing prices down.

My last 'visit' to the Bangkok Pattaya it was really busy in there so impressions are there is enough business around.

Is this the construction I see on the West/City side of Sukhumvit?

Yes it is, they are making good progress and it looks like it will be a big hospital

I have only ever visited the Rutnin hospital due to an eye infection (I'm not the typical eye patient). I was seen straight away, diagnosed properly and it was cheap. Too bad I hear nothing but bad things about other hospitals. Makes one wonder if India or the Czech Republic are better destinations for medical tourists

The Pattaya City Hospital on Soi Buakao is great.

Almost brought tears to my eyes when they presented me the 100 baht bill for my visit and when I asked why its so cheap the answer was " government take care".

The first time that Thailand was not discriminating against Mr. Farang.

We've got a couple of BMs who are still with us after treatment at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya for major cardiac events.

I'm happy for them. Hopefully there wasn't a falang surcharge.

So am I, but either they had good insurance cover, or lost a substantial lump of cash.

When I was there the wife ran into 2 people she knew in there (don't they always), Thai couples, and they too had been presented with eye watering bills.

One stoically said, 'what else I can do, if not pay my wife die'.....

There was. Oh, there was. :cry1

When we talk about farang surcharge, are we saying that for the same treatment/services at the same private hospital, Bangkok Pattaya for example, a farang will be charged more than a Thai? Not saying it isn't so, but sometimes I think people are comparing charges at a Thai government hospital with charges at a private hospital.

I'd imagine the most common problem is unnecessary tests.

I had a bug in Manila and the doc ordered an ultrasound. The technician was asking me over and over again why the doc ordered the test. He said I had a hernia. The bill for the test was the biggest expense of all including the doc's charges. Antibiotics were the fix and I had to insist on them on a subsequent visit.. There must be a kickback or minimum procedures expected. Who better than a rich foreigner to get the bucks from?

Yes, you would be correct. The BKK/Pattaya hospital has 3 levels of charging people for the same treatment.

1) Highest is for anyone with insurance, they literally rape the insurance companies.

2) Any foreigners, holidays or expats with no insurance.

3) Then along way down the list is local Thai people.

My neighbor at my house near the hospital is a consultant there for the foreign people who use the hospital and he told me this himself

By comparison, in the U.S., we charge people without insurance, or without the right flavor of insurance more, If your provider is not in your insurance company's preferred provider network or you don't have insurance, you will easily be charged 100% more for the same service.

I was in Samitev in Bangkok (closest to Suk 33).

Emergency room, private room, IV meds for 2 nights:

$1200

Great care. I was very impressed.

I put it on my CC. Was reimbursed for all but $100 copay when I got back.

Samitev would not deal with my insurance. But who can't put 1200 bucks on their card?

If there were different levels of cost, I did not know of it and even if there were, the price was far better than with insurance in America.

I was in Billabong one afternoon having a fry up for breakfast and there was an Aussie chatting to some other Dude, I think they were both staying at Billabong.

He was saying how he had been treated in hospital for a heart attack and his life was on hold while Family back home tried to sell his house to raise cash to pay for his hospital bill. Having been through the exact same scenario only weeks before, I was wondering how he managed to leave the hospital without settling his bill.

I wasn't party to the conversation but couldn't help but overhear what was being said because we were the only three in the bar on a quiet afternoon.

He had no insurance and no cash funds yet he was 'apparently' allowed to leave the hospital without paying in full. I'm sitting there eating my full English breakfast wondering to myself if he's trying to scam the other guy or if he did in fact manage to find a way to leave the hospital on a promise that he would some how pay.

I'm wondering if the hospital called the cops and they confiscated his passport until he paid up?

The first time I had a heart attack in Pattaya I had travel insurance and I was treated first and asked to pay when I was out of intensive care and recovering in a private room. I gave them my insurance details and expected the insurance company to deal with the hospital directly and settle the bill. Big mistake on my part!

The insurance company didn't want to pay, nor did I. I unplugged myself from all the wires and tubes, got dressed and attempted to leave the hospital. The Cops were there in less than five minutes. You pay or you come with us. I paid! I was lucky I had available funds to settle the bill otherwise I would have been carted off by the cops.

How did this Aussie guy manage to get his freedom? Did he go through the mill at the cop shop/Immigration detention centre or was he just trying to scam this other guy in the bar?

There must be thousands of travellers to LOS that don't have the cash to pay their hospital bills. How do they resolve the problem?

Anybody here had this predicament?

I was compis mentis when I had to go in there and they were very efficient about getting both my insurance details, and a deposit from my credit card before the op could go ahead. I also got a strong impression I was going nowhere until the bill was settled, hanging about in the private room dressed and ready for ages. I even had a visit from a sour faced farang who seemed intent on checking my visa/ 90 day reporting status. Fortunately my insurance guaranteed 90% payment, and I left their accounts office with cash in my pocket, change from the deposit they had already taken from the CC.

I do hope they hurry with the new hospital, haven't been feeling too well lately.

My second heart attack, I got transferred from PIH to BHP, I think I stayed in the private recovery room for two days as a prisoner while the hospital and my insurance company were negotiating the final bill. The room at the Bangkok Hospital Pattaya was luxurious compared to my guesthouse room in Soi LK Metro but I wanted out of there. Only Buddha knows how much the hospital were billing the insurance company for the room. Total rip off. I paid cash just to get the fuck out of there because at one stage it looked like I would be held under siege with no end date and the possibility of me having to pay for everything. As it was, I needed to pay @ £5,000 cash just to leave and go recover in my 700 Baht/Night guest house with sexy nurse.

Total bill was @ £14,000. I got most of my money back in the end (several months later) but antbody reading this drivel, take heed...

Never travel without insurance and don't expect the insurance company to bail you out. Make sure you have cash funds available for your UNEXPECTED problems, Hospital, Police, Scam, etcetera.
