ONE WAY HIGHWAY FOR JOMTIEN

An important announcement was made at Pattaya City Hall on the afternoon of Thursday, 30th October that Jomtien Beach Road will become a one way highway. This major changeover will happen on Wednesday, 12th November, 2014 and will affect the stretch of road from the intersection with Jomtien Second Road (near the Matchanu Monkey Statue) down and along the beach front and go up to the Chaiyapruek Road junction to Jomtien Second Road. For further information call Pattaya City Call Centre: 1337."

He cynically says, there aren't any one way roads in Thailand!

This is poorly written. The one way should end at Soi Chiayapruk and not up to second road. Ending at Second road would make getting to many businesses impossible. Then again, logic rarely enters into these decisions.

Surely Second road and Chaiyapruk will still be two way?

They will have to make the narrow adjoining sois one ( either) way too.

Not looking forward to this hope they adjust the lights where the traffic from 2nd road converges……..

I will still look in all 4 directions when crossing the street……...

I walked down Second Jomtien Road to the Rhompo market this evening to have a meal. I was getting sick and tired staying by myself in the condo, doing my own cooking, as it was too wet due to the unseasonal heavy rain to venture outside. The missus went to Bangkok last week for 2 days to visit some of her family. Unfortunately, she had and accident when trying to board a bus and is still in Bangkok getting medical treatment. I will pick her up next Saturday at her sister's place after she gets the stitches removed from her face. I like a bit solitude now and then, but don,t like staying by myself for more than a week, especially in a place like Jomtien or Pattaya.

Anyway, the rain came to an end today. It was sunny and the dry season seems to have started. When walking down Jomtien Second Road the traffic was absolutely crazy. It is a real challenge to avoid not to getting run over when trying to cross the road. A lot of the condos are completed or getting near completion and more are planned on any empty space the developers can find. The condos are getting built with insufficient or no parking spaces. The footpath (side walk) is a disgrace, with rubbish getting dumped everywhere and Thais riding scooters thinking it was built for them.

I walked back on Beach Road and the traffic was reasonably light.Nearly everyone seems to want to use Second Jomtien Beach Road instead. If they make it a one way street, the Baht buses will be using Jomtien Second Road as well and add to the chaos. The many potholes between between the Rhompo market and the Hanuman Square are still there and unmarked.

I will take a few pictures in the next couple of days and post them. On the positive side there is a new restaurant in one of the new 4-storey buildings opposite us. It is called Das Backhaus and they sell 5 varieties of the best German bread, bread I have not eaten since I left Europe as an 18 year old kid.

I walked down Second Jomtien Road ......

Welcome back to Thailand Gonzo, I hope you are well.

Sorry to hear of the Mrs having an accident, nothing too serious I hope. Do wish her 'get well soon' from me.

I think it rained again during the night and is clouding over now where I am, North of town, so the rainy season has a little bit left for us yet, hopefully it will be done with soon, and we can enjoy the cool dry season.

I am surprised by the Jomtiem one-way system, last time I was on the Beach Rd there I didn't think it was necessary yet. The construction on 2nd Rd moves at quite a pace, I notice each time I head for immigration for the reporting, which I will do next week. I will look forward to your pics and hope the wife returns unmarked soon.

I had a cinnamon roll from Das B yesterday……very nice. And a lovely lady serving!!

Agree with Gonzo.

The changes don't seem necessary. The building is rampant…...

But adapt or die…...

Gotta try Das Backhaus myself. Been by there a few times, but had other destinations..your recommendation sealed the deal.

Actually, it is called Back Fabrik (baking factory) and is a really nice air conditioned place. The don't have a full menu, but everything else one would want for breakfast, omelets, a variety of excellent bread rolls and lots of other food. They have Thai dishes as well and very good coffee at the price of a beer in your bar, about THB 110-120. The young German baker is a friendly guy and an excellent host. He is in the back of the building in his Fabrik in the morning baking bread, but often sits outside his restaurant in the front watching the crazy traffic and the world go by in the afternoon. He speaks very good English. His place opens at 6 AM and closes late in the evening. He sells 5 varieties of German 1 kilo loafs of bread, which are on display on the right side of the shop and costs between THB 160 and 240 baht. This morning I bought the Mixed grain Roggenbrot. He also sells those really big round loafs of bread my grandmother near Munich used to bake. They are too big to fit into my refrigerator and probably are sold to other German restaurants in Naklua, where most of the German expats live.

I was hoping they would start opening restaurants and other shops on Jomtien Second Road, instead of just building so many condominiums. A good German baker would have been amongst one of my first choices. The best time to buy bread in the Back Fabrik is between 6 and 8 AM. They are often sold out after that.

Thanks for asking. The TGF (missus) is always fit and healthy. I gained 4 kilos in Darwin from all the beer I drank and all of the good food available there. The extra 4 kilos will soon disappear, as I am back in training and watching my diet. The missus eats more than I do, but never puts on any weight.

I think she will be all right when I pick her up next Saturday. If there is a scar in her face after the stitches will be removed we will be able to handle that. There is a tough kid behind that smiling face. She proved that when she displayed her Muay Tai skills in the Karate school near our place in Darwin.

So is the plan to keep 2nd road as 2 way? If so, another lane would be good heading towards Pattaya. I think that section of Jomtien 2nd road will be full of business, condos and hotels in 10 years time. Land owners along 2nd rd will be very happy with this change.

I took those pictures between 7 and 8 AM, when the traffic was still light on Second Jomtien Road. My skills as a photographer are not as good as some of the experts on this board. I am still using 10 year old Canon Power Shot A720 IS 8.0 Megapixel digital camera. :sosad

The bread looks good……...

But I'll give the french loaves a miss…had two of them and not to my personal taste.

Whenever I go for my swim in A1 early, at 5.30ish, (my usual time is 6 am) I often meet in the lift going down one of the employees of the bakers who opens up and cleans the shop at that time.

I'm in a sports vest and budgie smugglers she's crisp and smart in her orange uniform……I always feel slightly uncomfortable but make an effort to chat.

This bakers is a definite plus.

Use the red light crossing at your own peril. Some cars will stop, many will not. There are many bars behind the Rompho market. Some are dead and most others are dying. There are quite a few nice girls, but they must be hungry, as there are hardly any customers.

Do not parking. Thais park anywhere and everywhere, it doesn't matter how much they slow traffic and cause others inconvenience.

I've seen many of them park on Soi Bukauw, mosey up to the ATM into 7/11 completely stopping all traffic in one direction.

I suppose Thai now copy the many farangs who park where they want, preferably in front of their bar, regardless the fact that they park in the middle of a curve, or that there is already an other car parked on the opposite side of the street. Soi Buakhao is a very good example of this bad farangs' attitude :(

This will be a month of fun and games……..

Miserable Russians and the others coming out of their beach front hotels and having to travel in the opposite direction to Pattaya on a baht bus or hoof it to 2nd road to travel towards Pattaya……..and then if they only wanted the other end of Jomtien having to hoof it from 2nd road back to Jomtien beach.

The coaches struggling along sois 7 and 5…..

The tail backs at either end of second road……….Mainstream traffic dodging the frantic U turners…….

'Appy days…….
