TransAsia Taipei crash

Recommended Posts

Flew to Buriram today on a Nok Air ATR-72. Thought it best to not ask the GFE provider whether she had seen the news.

It was lucky that it missed the buildings.

We fly Bangkok Airways up to Sukhothai on ATR-72's.... Mrs Fiend has seen the video and it hasn't put her off flying in them.

It is very strange that both engines failed. Hopefully they will be able to come up with a reason why. Sounds like a fuel problem, maybe water or the wrong fuel.

Some reports that there were problems with one engine, and they may erroneously have restarted the other one.

It's every pilots nightmare that something would fail on takeoff. Simply no time to fix the problem. RIP.

From this news article, TransAsia has 68 pilots, some 29 pilots were suspended after failing or missing safety tests, a week after a fatal crash. Ten (10) pilots failed oral proficiency tests designed to show how they would handle an emergency.

If these numbers are correct, more than 40% of TransAsia pilots have been grounded. It kind of reminds me of the problems that they have in India where airline pilots were found to have paid bribes to avoid proficiency flight exams but still get certified and hired as pilots.

Automated flight and landing systems lull the pilots into letting the plane fly itself and not keeping up their emergency proficiency skills.

Took my car to have the tires rotated and balanced at a national chain. The store manager had to drive my car in and out of the stall because the mechanic assigned to the job couldn't drive a straight shift.
