North, South, East and West facing accommodation

Recommended Posts

It seems obvious when you think seriously about it but it's easy to make a mistake.

South facing in the northern hemisphere you get the sun right? So Pattaya is northern hemisphere so it'll be the same, right? WRONG! Stop thinking "Europe" and move your latitude.

A NORTH facing room in Pattaya June to September will get the sun all day, and the aircon will have difficulty keeping it cool, because the sun is somewhere over/near the Tropic of Cancer - at least without looking at Wiki, I think that's the logic.

We won't be fooled again.

Yes I see the differences in time of year. I have a large blind on my lounge window, which is pretty much East facing, yet I have to move it towards the South around September and back t'other way as we pass through say March. I even fitted extra hooks to facilitate this silliness. I was also recently shocked to find my gas cylinders were in direct sunlight and pretty hot up against a North facing wall.

Houses of course are built with overhanging roofs to keep the sun off during the heat of the day but condo and hotel walls don't have that protection.

Another difference is that in Europe you may want the sun on you, here I avoid it!

That works for going from the UK to India gsjoe http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/port-out-starboard-home.html

BUT, it was exactly the logic we were using in choosing a north facing room...... the sun is in the NORTH at Pattaya latitude at this time of the year so POSH doesn't work!

So I'm talking Tosh , with a capital T ,

But as you say if us knobs want the best seats , we need change are latitude ,

Sun's declination is currently almost the same as Pattaya's latitude (13 degrees North) IE it "appears" to pass directly overhead at Solar Noon. It moves South of Pattaya on 19th August and remains South until late April. Bla, blaa , blaaa  :bhappy

Thanks FBF (great info - I wonder when the "sun in the north" phase begins?) We have now moved to our third hotel where the room is east facing with a balcony so scope for sun-up Sangsom Cokes!!!

Wehey!

We are a little over a month before the equinox and the sun is close to directly overhead. We should be back to "sun in the north" in late April.

Or let us say it is directly overhead at about midday and darned hot! Normally have cloud cover this time of year.
