Shrinking Pattaya Reservoirs

With the recent rains had a look at the reservoirs this morning. First up, Huai Chak Nok Reservoir.

The small pond dammed off from the main reservoir.

They're using pumps now to move water from the inflow area on the north end into the main reservoir.

After Huai Chak Nok, used the back roads for a nice ride over to Mabprachan Reservoir.

Water level is up, but still quite a ways to go before they can start pumping from the reservoir again.

Update on the refilling of the reservoirs. First up Huai Chak Nok Reservoir which has slightly more water since the last update on the 10th.

Mabprachan Reservoir also has a bit more water, but still nowhere near enough to start pumping again.

Reservoir update time. A month since the last update and water levels are much improved. A few pics of Mabprachan Reservoir.

Some very high weeds now on the north end of the reservoir. Once the reservoir fills and the weeds die and decompose, there's a good chance the low oxygen levels that creates may kill off what remains of the fish population.

Pattaya Water Authority warns that despite rains, water supply remains low

The Pattaya Water Authority, in a post on their facebook page, warned this week that although Pattaya had recently suffered flooding and isolated heavy rains that reservoirs in the city remained low on water.

PWA Pattaya office chief Chaithas Eedsaeng stated in an interview with associated local press that the city water supply, although improved from prior months, was now only at 20% of capacity. This is based on all five reservoirs for the city that feed into the main treatment plant.

This has led to the Pattaya Water Authority deciding to reduce the total volume of tap water available to city residents daily, to 150,000 million cubic metres from 200,000 million cubic metres.  This may lead to some portions of the Pattaya area seeing reduced or even no water flow for periods of time, according to Chaithas.

He also stated that the situation was likely to improve in the back-end of this month as more rainfall was predicted for the Pattaya area.

The Pattaya News notes that rainfall is only one factor of lack of water, as we have previously discussed, with climate change, water management issues, construction related work and other factors also reportedly leading to the current situation.

I think he must be quietly trying to suppress his inner joy at the Covid lockdown and lack of tourists. He must be dreading any mass influx of visitors ......

The last update was almost one month ago and I was wondering about the water situation in Pattaya now. Certainly less demand this year into next will help that situation at the expense of others.

I have no idea about the reservoirs but all of my neighbours have been capturing rainwater for washing etc...Personally my monthly water bill for July was 30 baht!!!

Last time I was that way, Lake Maprachan looked like marshland. Quite a nice looking green area actually.... but not much of a lake.

Coincidentally I had planned on riding out today to capture a photo update. First up Mabprachan, which as you can see in the photos is slowly recovering, but still very low.

Saw this guy making good use of an umbrella to catch the wind and propel him and his boat along.

Water is once again around the base of the overflow structure.

Looks like fishing restrictions. Can someone with Thai language skills translate?

If you know where to look, you can just barely make out the top of the head of a Thai walking through the weeds. Hint: just left of center in the pic

Here he is in a small clearing. Gives you a good idea of just how high the weeds have grown.

Same as Mabprachan, Huai Chak Nok is also slowly recovering, but still extremely low.

Extra pump is no longer needed to get the water to the pumping station.

I think this will make for a nice park once done, and with more water in the reservoir.

Mabprachan Reservoir still has a long way to go towards filling enough to make it through the next dry season.

It's gonna be ok you can all relax, there's not going to anybody taking showers,having soapies or getting their laundry done for maybe another year or so.

Plenty of time for them to expand or build more reservoirs before the unwashed hoards descend.

Only one month left to the rainy season and water levels are still looking bleak for this time of year. From this morning, the current condition of Huai Chak Nok Reservoir.

Over at Mabprachan Reservoir water levels are still down as well.

There's is a bit of water feeding into north end of the reservoir. Can just barely make out the stream amongst the heavy growth of weeds in this pic.

This is the source of that water. Mabprachan Park is off to the right.

Perhaps due to the digging out and dredging that has been done to improve the capacity and catchment and diminish future supply issues.......  naw.

Now that rainy season is all but over, thought it would be interesting to compare the water level in Mabprachan Reservoir to what it was on this day one year ago. The photo update below has photos taken this morning followed by the photo from last year taken from the same point.

While the water level at the overflow outlet is only slightly lower than last year, you'll see in the other photos just how much lower the water level is across the reservoir compared to last year.
