A stolen phone, and how it can be monitored remotely.

Recommended Posts

Just watched this mini film of how a guy tracks the progress of his stolen cellphone via remote monitoring and observation of the thief as he goes about his daily life. Interesting short documentary, subtitled in English.

If you have twenty minutes to spare, watch this? :

I think I'll add that app too, just in case it happens to me.

Phone thieves are getting a lot smarter. The first thing they do is a factory reset if possible and then remove the battery until they think the former owner is no longer looking for it. The iPhones password protection is pretty solid but what good does that do the former owner? There's very little satisfaction knowing the thief cannot use the phone. If there is no way the thief can hack the phone, they sell it for parts. Here in Thailand the police have no interest in trying to find a stolen phone.

If someone stole from me I would prefer they got as little as possible out of it - even if it did me not other good.

You can factory reset and wipe the phone with the app. I am not sure if you have to have rooted the phone beforehand though.

I've downloaded the app and now I have to get my phone stolen to check it out :P

The problem is you won't know if it worked or not. I have a thing about putting anything confidential on my phone. Phones are too easily stolen to take a chance.

I don't even bother to use the fingerprint unlock.

Why wouldn't you know if it worked or not?

You could download the app and try it yourself from the internet site (make a backup beforehand).

The first thing a thief does is remove the battery and if the battery isn't removable, there is an app on Playstore and even instructions on the Internet that will quickly run the battery totally dead. Anyways if it gives you some peace of mind, go for it, it costs nothing. As for myself, I don't put any sensitive information on my phone.

I can't see where not putting sensitive info on your phone has anything to do with the capabilities of this app.

That's your thing, not mine and/or many others.

Just put me down as an old Luddite. I don't trust my phone and am skeptical of my home computer. I'm even nervous about using a credit card here in Thailand.

Friend of mine falls asleep in the chair.... his soon to be ex girlfriend takes his thumb and presses it gently against the home button and sifts through his messages.....

End of story.

What is the app? Have I missed something?

The app is Cerberus available in the Play store for Android phones.

Incidentally, it would make an excellent tracking app for anyone who might be wondering where and what someone is doing.

Sponsoring a girl? Want to know where she is, what she is doing? Put the app on her phone.

You would be a somewhat richer man had you more trust Gary... but Pattaya Pete will be telling us all about that soon.

My issue is I am a somewhat poorer man for having trust, so you carry on!!!

Last time I had a cc number go walkabout was after I had used the card at a Hilton hotel in Portland, Oregon.
