Trip Advisor's Top Pattaya Restaurants

Recommended Posts

Fine dining is great if you are on a Diet, i have been to a few in my life, large plates will little food, i am fine with basic average restaurant food.

If anybody wants to add 3 or 4 blobs of 'sauce' to decorate my plate they are wasting their time!

And I hope never to be given a 'foam'.... looks disgusting.

One or two places will get their noses out of joint over that list. Those that think they should be higher and those that feel they should be on the list.

Interesting that not a single Retox venue made the list. Is that because they are not considered restaurants? They are very popular with those who use them, they might not be the type who vote on Trip Advisor.

Retox isn't HiSo.

That may be the reason.

In my experience, you never really know how the food will be at any particular place. I've had fantastic food at places that are completely ordinary, and I've had just average food at places that are supposed to be great. And the same place can vary from day to day.

Reviews are strange things.

...

It gets confusing to say the least. I try to follow up bad reviews with the managers to find out what actually happened. Sometimes we just did a bad job, sometimes the customer was unreasonable and sometimes nobody remembers what is painted as a major incident. The biggest problem I think is managing expectations. Looking for a fine dining experience and looking for a cheap bite to stave off hunger are very different requirements. Your reaction to a place is probably as much about your expectations as anything else.

Pete- I would certainly agree that "managing expectations" is a huge problem for the entire hospitality industry, hotels as well as restaurants and bars. This is a particular problem in Pattaya because many visitors from W. European and English-speaking countries expect the same standard of food and accommodation as they enjoy back home but want to pay much lower prices since Pattaya is a "Third-World" shit hole. It's fairly common to find that mindset reflected in food reviews on the punter boards and the FB food groups.

But a few reviewers aren't simply stupid or uninformed, they have nefarious intentions. Have you ever had anyone try to "extort" a free meal or discount at the Beer Garden through the threat of a bad review on Trip Advisor or one of the Pattaya Facebook food groups? I know this happens on a regular basis in Pattaya, just wondering if you have encountered it. Luckily, dishonest food reviews haven't appeared on Pattaya Talk for more than a year, thanks to action by the mods.

The Shed at Dulwitch became the No 1 restaurant in London without ever serving a meal.

The story of the Shed at Dulwitch is strange to say the least. It made obvious that Trip Advisor had no measures in place to prevent fraud of this sort. That's astounding for a company of its size and influence. The algorithm T A uses for its rankings should have caught and red-flagged the Shed's rapid rise in the rankings. This should have touched off a check by human eyes.

What's even more amazing is that NO ONE outside of T A ever thought to visit London's highest-ranked restaurant. Most media outlets, print or broadcast, have food reviewers or commentators. London is home to dozens of professional food writers and hundreds of amateur food-related Web sites, blogs, FB groups, etc. Moreover, many restaurateurs check out new entries in the field to see if they're a serious competitor.

That NONE of these people thought to go to the physical address of a restaurant taking Trip Advisor by storm is mind-boggling. Even if they couldn't get a reservation by phone or email, that's even more reason to visit the restaurant to make sure it's actually that busy. It's so extremely peculiar I can't help wondering WHY NO ONE CAUGHT ON TO THE FRAUD.
