pprune.org the professional pilots forum have reported that an EVA 747 had a mishap at LHR, possibly Saturday nights flight.

Apparently maintenance were checking for hydraulic leaks and the nosewheel hadn't got a pin properly inserted and it collapsed, caused quite a bit of damage.

There is a good photo but i'm not clever enough to post it on this site. i just hope any brothers going to BKK got there OK.

Apparently they were trying to simulate a full complement of fatties in the nose section of Evergreen Deluxe. :D

I would try to get the "TAIL NUMBER" as that remains permanently for that particular ship set. It would be one I would not want to board immediately!

It was also reported that the nose collapsed on top of one of those Tow Motors that pull the planes around the tarmac. It appeares the tow motor is completely buried in the belly and will cost a few million to repair all the damage to the underside of the aircraft.

 

Chesire Tom..thanks for the tail number !! I wouldn't want to fly on a wrecked 747 until they prove it with 30 or 40 successful voyages.

 

Can you imagine the feeling that poor mechanic had to go through when he felt the cockpit sliding out from under him? He was running the first of a series of tests of the hydraulics on that front landing gear when the pin fell out and collapsed the nose.

Nah, not a planespotter. :banghead The original pic was in fact a huge .bmp that I had to reduce and convert to .jpg so that it could be posted. The aircraft registration is actually quite clear on the nose section on the original pic.

It'll be easier to fix than VH-OJH the QANTAS 747 that ran off the runway at BKK a few years ago.

Yes, that was a write off, or should have been, but that would have put a blemish on Qantas's record of never having a total loss. So they spent millions to repair it.

Expensive repair, yes - but look on the bright side - at least this didn't happen when the plane was landing.

Lady I know at EVA says cause "still under investigation" but out of action for 10 weeks and $10,000,000 + bill.

 

One story I got, Engineer was testing hydrolics on nose flaps and they closed on u/c pushing out pin. I have my doubts about that. It was a Ground Power Unit that was crushed, not Push-Back Tug.

 

P.S.

 

I am not totaly convinced that Tom is not a Plane Spotter. Think we should put it to the vote ? :beer

Just to exhonorate my workmates at Air Canada- B.A do the maintainance for EVA. Well for now they do ! :D

The aircraft registration is B-16462, a 747-Combi.

ahh too bad it wasn't one of their regular 400s. Only 12 seats for FC in the nose(which they never seem to fill), wheras the combis have about 50, which are always filled.
