You are correct... Thais do seem to focus on self and give less consideration to those around.Be it from stopping their vehicle in the middle of the road, parking their motorbike across the footpath where you were just walking, talking on their mobiles, lots and lots of things. But look around, I have seen many such examples from other nationalities too.... try China! So some Thais don't focus on etiquette too much when bringing up their kids, I have seen worse in the UK, where the parents let them run riot in a pub while they get drunk. Manners are a personal thing and you will find the best etiquette amongs some well educated Thais..... those around us here are country bumpkins.

No, according to the doctor her T-cell count was so low she would have died in months. She looked ill too... customers would have been few. Your comment seems uninformed. Due to his help she was able to make a return to near full health and potentially propogate her illness with her reckless and callous behaviour. I am not so sure. I do believe Barrie's efforts came out of kindness, but the realities, in a pragmatic way, are he may have indirectly helped her infected others with HIV. Of course the girl was the selfish and manipulative one, but Barrie, enabled her to 'go back to work'. She had already showed a callous attitude to him, so why should she do different to others. Quite a drama with no easy answers.
