Maybe by trying to get a pay rise now, the BA staff are hoping to get a higher percentage of salary payout if BA fold? Which ironically could be because of staff greed? Staff demand more money. Airline has to raise fares to maintain margins. Customers dont use airline because of stupid prices. Smaller profits so airline cuts services and staff. Staff demand large separation packages. Management have to quit because of unhappy shareholders but they get ridiculous payouts and live happily ever after. Yep, this is a good business model!

C'mon sailfast, dont hold back. What do you really think?

I read with interest the deals and prices all of us have to negotiate to fly to LOS. It's not an exact science but most regular travellers are pretty good at sniffing out good deals. What I do notice is the very few BM's from the UK seem to use BA as their prefered carrier. In fact anything but. Mind you the last few times I used them I wasnt impressed with their customer service. So what are the reasons BA are avoided like the plague?

I dont doubt you at all Stinky but having your Thai land ownership options limited to an estate is not exactly like being able to have a view over Kata Beach in Phuket or something is it? You seem to be limited to what the Thais have decided you can have. Far from ideal.

Fkn how much? Would this mean no more fun bus rides out to get on Air Asia flights? And what airport taxes will be tacked on to airfares to pay for this? Have they got approval from the yellow shirts? Airports, Hospitals ane Shopping Malls ..... never finished. BTW .. whats the latest estimate on the skytrain link to be finished? -
Personally I saty at the metro and I love it. But all the places in the area are quite good.

Mark, I have the same job as you in Oz. Your retirement scheme sounds far superior to mine so well done to you! I suggest a trip to a financial planner and or an accountant. The tax implications for an early retirement can be severe if you arent careful. You need to be 50 to get a Thai retirement visa. You can probably go earlier if you marry the Thai girl. Think VERY hard about this. Open a thai bank account and organise transfers from your Oz bank. Returning to Oz every 3 months is just an expensive follie. You need to find a way around that. I wont retire for about 5 or 6 years when I turn 55. Yes Thailand is on the radar but I have time to see how things go. I do think 90,000bt if the accommodation is taken care of is a fair amount to live on. At current rates thats AU$100 or 3,000bt a day. You are probably living on less than that now. However .... the exchange rate is out of your control. I did a Thailand trip and the rate was 29bt - $1. Six months later I got just over 22bt - $1. I lost almost 1/3 of my spending power in a flash. Ask some of the Brit expats what it is like to lose even 1/4 of their budget? Just something to keep in mind. Good luck with your health and like things are at work ... dont rush into anything

Sorry Scotty but what the Bratman said is right. Unlike Australia, the Thais do not let anyone do a job that can be done by a Thai. That means any sort of labouring or blue-collar jobs. If you can find a Thai company that will sponsor you, then you may have a chance but odds are any job will be given to unskilled cousin Somsak from Korat ahead of you. You could always form a Thai/Aussie company but you can never own more than 49% and need to have Thai partner you can trust. Good luck with that one too. Marry a rich Thai girl and get her pregnant? Win the lottery? Check out Thaivisa, there is more info on there.

Arriving INTO Poomi at about 8pm last night. I just beat the gig queues through immigration They made the green 'nothing to declare' line a free for all and just let everybody through after you collected your bags. It doesnt appear they have enough x-ray machines or staff to cope with 5 aircraft arrivals at once. However if there is only a few hundred people, I would suggest your bags are more likely to be scanned.

Last trip to LOS got a Nokia N79 for a little over 11000bt. Very similar to N85 without the slide. So far happy with it and still finding new things about it. Also bought the chinese made 'fake' N98+ touchphone in TukCom. Was under 4000bt, 2 batteries, dual sim slots and a TV that works quite well. Would make an excellent affordable phone for the teelak.

Sheesh, Yes in fact I have been in Quebec and attacked by mosquitos, ....... during the SUMMER!

Dr Mick, I had mozzie problems in my hotel room in Phuket. The on again-off again teelak told me to turn the air-con on as they cant survive the cold. She was right, 10 mins later, no mosquitos. Think about it ... no mosquitos in cold climates. This of course wont help you sitting outside. Try and avoid sunset and sunrise, prime mozzie times. Dont wear dark coloured clothes.. attracts them. Get coils, burn incense or get a zapper. Avoid sitting near light sources. Now give this a go ... Take lots of vitamin B. I read the smell we put off when we have lots of vitamin B (B6 mainly) in our system is very unpleasant to mosquitos. Either get tablets or take Beroccas (available from Boots). Give it a try, Vit B is good for you anyway.

I agree. The best option for mongering in Patong is to get a nice girl friendly hotel and hit the beach if you want a splash!

There is a pool just off Soin San Sabai that the hotels along that Soi use. Maybe try Tony Resort on Rat U Thit? Good rooms and decent pool. Prices should be good in Phuket for low season at the moment.

Am very happy that I am booked in again in August. I usually locked my laptop in my suitcase but I'd be amazed if you have security issues at the Metro. I bought an Acer Aspire One now which will be great for travelling.

Just had a look at their website. If you live in Perth, Melbourne or the Gold Coast you can get return flights to Bkk including taxes for around $500 via KL! These fares were available if travelling in about 3 weeks time. For anyone wanting to make a trip at short notice, these are amazing prices. Unfortnately I dont have the time off work and I dont live in Perth, Melbourne or the Gold Coast.
