  1. There are lots of choices for slow cookers and, as a poster says, rice cookers are perfect for it if you have a storage problem. .
  2. Owners of vending machines in Yurp sure noticed it when the coins first hit the street, and they were getting bazillions of baht. The EU demanded Thailand change the 10 baht coin (really!). When they didn't work because the Thais were so overcome with belly laughs and uncontrollable giggling, the Yurpeens did something to the euro coin, can't remember what. Dee You Em. .
  3. Well, my point was now you know! I'm not beating you up because you forgot. You won't beat this, better just get to getting a new one. Speaking of old, I have a thingmy that pops up on my computer to remind of such stuff. Then you CAN really forget, no problem, computers remember stuff a lot better than me. I haven't missed a passport, driver's licence, green card or similar for quite a long time. And I am a victim of CRS. I think passports are generally issued for the same time as always. Something special in the land of stumped-trained sheep about this? I'd agree you have to think even f
  4. I've heard of it, you bet. I think Thailand might (probably) let you in, but with a warning - because you're only going to stay for a month, after all. NO ONE will give you a visa, for sure. Get another passport. Really. .
  5. Tried to get a bottle of Mekhong lately? SOMETIMES people cheat the law of supply and demand. They're crazy, but they do it. .
  6. The holiday is from Saturday Dec 31 through Tuesday, Jan 3. Back to work/school on Wednesday Jan. 4. New Year's Eve is an official holiday in Thailand. .
  7. Whoops, sorry, I thought it was a religious thread, didn't realise it was also about sports. Looking forward to the new, family-sized San Francisco against the big guy in a few hours. Of course, I was so dumb, I thought San Diego-Baltimore would be a competitive game. Still, Norv has found new ways to lose this year, and I have full confidence we won't have the Bolts to kick around in two more weeks.
  8. New Year's is a four-day holiday weekend this year, because the two official holidays are on Saturday and Sunday. The roads, rails and flights will be packed from Wednesday to Wednesday at least. It's almost always possible to get a bus where you're going, but you push, shove, sweat and wait for it. .
  9. It's absolutely the airline's call. The reason (some) airlines have this rule is because if you are turned away at Thai immigration, THEY have to fly you out -- that's the Thai rule. If the airline trusts you won't be turned away (which almost no one is, of course) then the airline may well let you go. A couple of times ago, the airline asked me and I only *_said_* "I live there" and the girl didn't even want to see my visa. The last time, she did. That's a big US airline, though, and likely to have much more stringent rules about it. The point is: Up to them. I should have stipulated by n
  10. Never say "never" but in general, airlines won't let you fly to Thailand on a one-way ticket - unless you provide proof you live there of course. .
  11. It's as easy as that. It might be 500 baht, it probably would be nothing. I have a feeling this thread is going to degenerate now, but it *is* as easy as that. .
  12. Yeah I use it person-to-person and also some paid calls to landlines, it has been fine lately. If I had to guess, I'd guess AIS as the outsider and thus the culprit. .
  13. Jealousy is a sad thing to see. But I truly was interested to learn of your definition of a patriot. I fear... no, strike that, I lament the horrible fact you're not alone. No country is perfect, and this a terrible flaw in your so-often wonderful one. .
  14. Yeah? For $170,000 a year I could be patriotic. When I did it, I got $135 a month, and repeatedly shot at. You're welcome, though. .
  15. Plastic display one, then? Heh. No, seriously I've never seen one go that distance. Hell, if you can get away with it, go for it. .
  16. I got to say I don't see the value here, but what the hey? Information not only wants to be free, it *is* free. Who knows? One day it may be crucial for my defence team to know that farman squeezed in just in front of me in the thread. .
  17. Yeah, kind of my point, with the stipulation you could put any other species in there instead of "brits". Stones, glass houses, etc. And that definitely DOES include the USA without a smidgen of a soupcon of doubt, but not ONLY the US, which was my main point. Why not? There's stuff to be proud of without doubt. I'm a half-full glass kind of guy myself. Just don't be blinded, that's all. Even the greatest country, whatever that one is, ALSO has warts. .
  18. Spoken like a true American. You absorbed the truthspeak well. It's good to see Obama following the Bush policies in general. But He BLEW Iraq and He will be very sorry for his inattention if He gets to be the prez for four more. Him claiming credit is a very bad idea, dumber than Mission Accomplished. If He had to pander to his lefties for some reason I can't fathom, He should have just zipped up about it. Mouthing off will hurt Him. But hey. Just curious what one-word description you'd use for a paramilitary force of 15,000 (or whatever) in Iraq? Their boss, Hillary Clinton, cal
  19. Yeah, but there IS a reason, of course, and a darned good one - "any excuse for a party". There is not only the traditional Thai Christmas celebration but the traditional Thai Chinese New Year and the traditional Thai Halloween and the traditional Thai April Fool's Day and the traditional..... Your lady doesn't feel she should have to explain anything so primal. She's right, really. Thais on inventing holidays are like Russians on everything else BUT holidays - they invented it. And face it, Thailand filled with anything BUT Thais would be a horrible country, and the cities would be si
  20. You're not thinking of the Royal Resort, are you? Pretty low blow either way, seeing they both had nothing to do with traffic. .
  21. Interesting. Haven't met anyone quite so religious about it. In Thailand, most tomatoes go in the fridge, most of the time. Doesn't seem to harm them and it does seem they last longer. Mind, there's a teensy bit of difference between a 40-degree Thai kitchen area and a 25-degree western one. See, there's the thing bothers me more. Put bananas and mangoes in the fridge and the colour is gone, they go brown and black, even if they're still edible they look horrible. Tomatoes stay red or reddish or whatever, you can't tell they've been refrigerated. You certainly have to pick this stuff
  22. Isn't that what I wrote? Let me check..... Yep, that's what I wrote. I'm not sure it's necessary to hold my coat on a really small incident like this, but thanks. I guess. .
  23. There's always a fee, but that's pretty high. I'd be flabbergasted if it has anything to do with your pastiness. That's an all-Thai business. On that, you're undoubtedly paranoid. .
  24. You beat me to that. In Bangkok they allow places to stay open all night. In Pattaya, they have to have them open to treat the bazillions caught in the jams of people and other animals. New Year's Eve is Amateur Night everywhere, but nowhere, and I mean NOWHERE so much as Pattaya. I thought Songkran was bad (which it is) until I got caught one holiday there. As they say: never again. .
