At the moment it is cheaper to take a layover at TPE as opposed to using another airline, flying non-stop into BKK. That's what I do. I get access to the Evergreen Lounge in Chiang Kai Shek (which now has a new name). As soon as the price is comparable, I'll think seriously about going non-stop. I can usually sleep with the help of a few Tylenol PM tablets, so the flight doesn't seem too long anyway.

I could be you're quoting rates for a suite at the Lodge during peak time, Dec 20 - Jan 3 approx. Rates go way up for the Christmas/New Year period.
