The post above (rkt) HAS to win the Post Of The Decade!!!!!! Both atavar AND attachment!
-
Very interesting, thank you. The main thing we don't know is Where do we get the videos, and the main answer you seem to have is Newsgroups (they've been a major source of entertainment to me before) though I didn't know they did films and TV programmes - can you list a few of the ng's that have this stuff please? How best to play the dl stuff is a bit secondary to me, illustrated by the fact that I didn't know MP3's were crap!
-
Then no one's atavar shows? A few months ago, MM or PP banned half megabyte sigs that a couple of BMs were using. I did a re-make of the sigs down to about 45k and offered them but they weren't used - I'll see what can be done with the Cowgirl.

Cuisine au Beurre (? forgot my little French) next to the IT centre took an hour to serve the first course, then another hour to serve the main, when they then asked what do you want for dessert I said I want to leave. If the New Orleans baby ribs are good then I don't like baby ribs. Terrible tomato sauce all over it. Never found a really good restaurant in Pats, although the 7 course gourmet dinner at Casa Pascal is pretty fair with unlimited red and white wine. But tiny portions, did not feel full at the end.

Dual pricing: My TGF went to get me a fish at a street stall, he said 40 baht, she said No hot sauce, he said Why not? She said It's for a farang. He said Ok 50 baht. She argued, How would you feel if he did that to you in his country? He said I'm not there. In the end she got the fish for 49 baht. Next time we got fish from the nice woman at the stall next door and gave him a big grin.

There may be quite a lot of BMs on dial-up who don't appreciate an atavar of 1.3 megabytes!

Northpoint Condo - Bhat 15 million!

Ooops! Well at least this thread hasn't spiralled down to look like so many other threads do, the usual suspects bashing each other. Executive action soon please! -
Northpoint Condo - Bhat 15 million!
bob2005 replied to GroundEngineer's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
That's 200,000 pounds... way, way too much, about double a reasonable price! 5% interest on that would give 60,000 baht a month and you could rent something very nice for that and still have the capital with no ownership hassles. I lived on that soi (5) for a year in 2003-4 and saw the wreaked hulk of the Northpoint building before they started doing it up, and although it looks swish I know what is underneath the facade. Suggest you get to know the market while renting for a while. -
Please note the important bit at the bottom: "does not bring his income generated abroad in the preceding year into the country" - so the income must be older than last year (calender year I think). Unfortunately pension income arising in the UK is taxed in the UK (but may escape Thai tax due to the Double Taxation treaty between Thailand and the UK). Another unfortunate thing is that British who are resident in Thailand do not receive inflation increases on their UK government pensions.

Yes, very good, I went the other way round bkk-heathrow-bkk in July and it was only 68,000 baht from Olavi agent in bkk.

I'm a week late with this, sorry. This is from an accounting firm in Bangkok which I presume is top-notch because they were the firm asked to clarify the Thai income tax situation by one of the top and biggest accounting firms in London, Eversheds, which I was using. These were three years ago, don't know if Thai law has changed since. Second answer first as it puts the whole thing in a nutshell, ie bring capital in, not recent interest. Please be advised that if Mr xxxxxx [me] merely remits the capital sum from his capital account into Thailand, he will have no Thai tax liability whatsoever. First answer, which covers the detail: Thank you for your instructions yesterday. In response to your queries, please be advised as follows:- Under Thai tax law, a person will be subject to Thai personal income tax under two circumstances: 1. That person gains assessable income from: (i) His post or office held or business carried out in Thailand; or (ii) His business of his employer in Thailand; or (iii) His property in Thailand. This is regardless of an income is paid in or outside of Thailand; and 2. A person who is deemed a resident of Thailand (i.e., a person residing in Thailand for a period of 180 days or more in any one calendar year regardless of such 180 days are consecutive) and gains assessable income in the preceding year from his business in other countries or from his property in other countries, and brings such income into Thailand. Based on the fact given and the relevant laws: 1. If Mr. xxxxxx has no assets in Thailand other than the two bank accounts and he does not gain any income locally, he will not be required to pay personal income tax in Thailand. For your information, interest incurred from monies in bank accounts are normally subject to tax withheld by the bank and the owner of the account will not need to file a tax return on such interest. 2. Assuming that this year Mr. xxxxxx has been staying in Thailand more than 180 days, he will not be subject to pay personal income tax in Thailand provided that he does not bring income derived in the preceding year from other country into Thailand. As a matter of practice, however, it is unlikely for the Thai tax authority to conduct an investigation on individual persons who may bring income generated overseas into the country, particularly a foreigner. In summary, if Mr. xxxxxx does not gain income in Thailand, and does not bring his income generated abroad in the preceding year into the country this year, and even though he is deemed a resident in Thailand, he will not be subject to pay personal income tax in Thailand. I hope this is of assistance. Should you have any further queries, please feel free to let me know. Kind regards, Utain xxxxxxxxxxx Senior Associate

Warning/ and or information desired

I came across the idea that the insects were killed with DDT 2-3 years ago, maybe in one of those 'No Money, No Honey' type books. -
In the early 80's I had the pinnacle of customer service from Cathay Pacific, I'd booked them singapore-bkk but because they had no smoking seats left they offered to switch me to a Singapore Airlines flight! I took it.
-
They could do very well, flying between the 2nd and 3rd largest economies in the world with 40-49% and 30-39% of those populations being smokers.
-
I couldn't watch it through to the end, did I miss a grand finale?

I flew Etihad business bkk-london-bkk in August and it was the nicest flight I've ever been on. I got what was virtually my own cubicle, flat bed 6'1 long, about a dozen films to choose from. I even liked the Abu Dhabi terminal, small and could smoke anywhere near the central opening through the floors, but for the first time ever I wanted to get back on the plane to my terrific seat. Window seats are best, singles, and you want an odd-number so the 'wall' of the cubicle blocks you from the aisle. I had 5A, which is the front row window, and 7A, two seats back, on the return. They serve from the back forwards so you might prefer further back which is about 11A. When I booked the seat for the return by phone, the guy said "Will you require the limo, Sir?" - you get a free car from home to the airport! Don't know if there's a free car in bkk but worth asking.

British who retire to Thailand and live off interest on capital don't need to pay tax. UK tax is not due on interest earned offshore, eg Jersey or Isle of Man, and Thai tax is not due on interest brought into thailand if it was earned more than two years ago. So you put the interest in a different account and transfer from the capital's account. After two years the interest can be put into the capital account.

It's called British English by the 'Gates Think Police', don't they know it's named after the nation that developed it, is it too US-unpatriotic to call it English English? There are enough differences for US-English to be called American, without any mention of its long-ago roots in English.

I saved this on 9th May 2004 from the PricewaterhouseCoopers website. Might be worth calling them to check if it's still true. The important bit is "The Thai cabinet has reduced the age criterion from 55 to 50 and no longer requires foreigners to transfer money to a Thai bank account". 67/2002: Non immigrant visa category "O - A" The Thai cabinet passed a resolution dated 11th September 2001 which has only become common knowledge in the last seven days. The resolution concerns new improvements to immigration procedures and is aimed at promoting the tourism industry by simplifying the regulations on obtaining non-immigrant visas, category "O-A", to accommodate long stay tourists. The Thai cabinet has reduced the age criterion from 55 to 50 and no longer requires foreigners to transfer money to a Thai bank account. The expatriate need only submit his deposit account or other evidence of income to a Royal Thai Embassy or Thai Consulate which should then issue a non-immigrant visa category "O-A" (long stay), without having to obtain the authorisation of the Immigration Department. This includes applications from tourists applying for a visa for the first time. The following qualifications must be satisfied in order to obtain a non- immigrant visa category "O-A" (long stay). 1. The applicant must be at least 50 years old. 2. The applicant must not have been prohibited from entering Thailand on a previous occasion. 3. The applicant must provide proof of financial resources from one of the following : * a bank account holding not less than 800,000 Baht * income from a pension or social welfare of not less than 65,000 Baht per month or * a bank account and annual income from a pension or social welfare of not less than 800,000 Baht. A foreigner holding a non-immigrant visa category "O-A" travelling into the Kingdom will have his passport stamped with a "permission to stay" in the Kingdom for a period not exceeding 1 year from the date of arrival. Question: Living expenses in the Pattaya / Jomien area
bob2005 replied to Turbota's topic in Expat Issues
I should add that these are the Electric Company prices. Some landlords try to stiff you for more if they charge the tenant for electricity. This came up before and it's news to me. And I did get 'A' level Physics in the days when the exams were hard! Watts = Volts x Amps and I thought amps had a time element in it, like number of electrons per second. If you use half a kW for two hours, surely thats the same as 1 kW for one hour? -

I just paid 6.13 baht per kilowatt in AC, it's about 3.6 baht in Pattaya. -
It's a Bangladesh airline so I didn't take it any further. Just popped up on some internet agents list, who's I forget.

Biman Air is very cheap, recently saw Business return for 38k baht.
