Connecting laptop to iinternet at Internet Cafe

At my recent trip to P I saw lots of internet cafes.

But is it possible to use your own laptop at some of these ?

I want to download my email to my own laptop using the inter cafes connection.

The internet cafes in my own country usually dont provide that service.

Why not just buy the internet card at 7-11 and connect from your room? Cards are cheap.

 

I have not had any luck using internet cafe's using my own laptop.

I asked the guy at the internet cafe upstairs at Big C once if I could do that and he said no problem. You just pay the same price for the line access. I didn't actually try it out but I'm sure he would accomodate you.

I was staying at the Diamond Hotel on Soi Diamond, and the internet shop directly opposite let me bring my laptop in and connect every day. They had a spare table with a cable and I simply plugged it in - Same cost as using their computers. I tried to do this at the shop at the off the start of walking street on South Pattaya road (before second street), but they said no – so I suppose you have to look around, but I had no problems finding one that would let me.

The internet shop at Big C has always let me plug in my laptop. the internet explorer shop that is right by wlaking street has connections for laptops as well. The internet shop at tops market let me plug in last year. Dynasty would not let me use my laptop and several internet shops would not let me plug in. Seem to be a hit or miss thing. Wireless seems to be coming to more places in pattaya but it was at the starbucks on beach road my last trip.

Yes you can connect from your hotel in 95% of the rooms. Where are you staying?

 

All you need is the Loxinfo service you can buy at any 7-11, Big C etc. It gives you the phone number to call, username and password, Just plug your laptop into your room phone line and away you go.

The best idea in my opinion is to just go around and find a cafe that will let you plug in..it'll be faster and its more reliable. Busy signals and stuff can be a problem, at least they were where I was staying at. Besides, the place I was staying at charged like 20 or 25 baht to place the call when I dialed out. After that cost I could have used the internet for like an hour at the cafe.

Well, if I needed my equipment I'd lug it around. Never had to walk far anyway, the 'net cafes are pretty much everywhere.

Does your lap top have wireless? If yes, just go to Starbucks at the corner of your Soi and Beach Rd, get a card from them, go upstairs and enjoy high speed access in comfort with a coffee. On my last two stays at the Sandy Spring on Soi 13 that's what I've done. I spent about an hour each morning on line clearing e-mails, reading my home newspaper and checking this board. I bought a 5 hour card which I used over a week and it worked out very well.

Any Starbucks have wireless internet.

Turn on computer and it will automatically connect to their hotspot and open web browser to this url https://shop.ksc.net/ you don't have to buy a card as you can purchase over the net from as little as 150 baht for an hours usage.

Why an internet cafe?

 

A few options:

 

1. Why not see if you can find a hotel that offers WiFi?

 

2. Go places like Starbucks or Shenigans (I'm sure there are others) that have WiFi. Have breakfast or lunch and surf the net.

 

3. Misty's Ago Go which has free WiFi. Go in sit down have a beer, surf the net and look at the girls.

 

I'm sure there are other options available.

Wireless:

spotty and inconsistant

ex: Bella villa prima, good speed at bfast, lousy 1 hour later, good in room in morning, not available in afternoon

 

i dont like to wait and it frustrates the shit out of me

 

Internet shops:

 

owner may say ok, come back later, and staff does not know how

 

i carry the laptop and find a shop that will let me plug in and has good speed

 

just cause you can plug in, does not mean the speed is any good

 

once i find a shop on that trip, i will repeat, however NOT a guarentee of connection or speed on each trip

 

if i only checked email, i am sure not a problem

however i need to sync my laptop with my server in my office and it needs a good speed connection AND allow me to connect to the sync service

I ues a wireless enternet card thats slots in2 the side of ur laptop.It was fairly expensive 10000 Baht.U can use ur thai mobile sim card.Its around 50 baht 1 hour or less.Can go on internet anywhere so it is good that way. It is called a (Axen GPRS AIR CARD)If u have the cash buy 1.Comes in handy.Oh yea nearly forgot got it in that big red computer store.Think it is called Dot Com or something if that vage info is any use.

Nice thread - reminded me of a question - I need to ask.

 

Are there ANY internet cafes in Pattaya - where one might take a chance and log on to Internet Banking - while in Pattaya?

 

I know it's dangerous - due to key stroke logging programs. Can these programs detect a drop down menu and/or the traditional password entry -which appears like *******?

 

Do any of you guys take a chance?

I've used internet banking in Pattaya since 1998 using internet cafes and for the last year my laptop without any problems.

 

The only safeguard I use is that the ATM account is kept low until I need to transfer cash into it (day before)

 

Dont forget you need to be seriously negligent NOT to receive recompense from your bank if monies were to disappear.

 

Certainly key logging doesnt mean YOU are negligent.

So even if you log all of that how are you going to login without knowing exactly what my PIN and password are?

 

I also bank with Nationwide and their login and security is similar.

Thanks - Yes I know the Natwest and Nationwide system, I use it myself and understand what you are saying. They ask for different details each time.

 

So when one inputs alpha/numerics, like hf4h - these appear as **** on the screen.

 

Can the keystoke logging program - record the hf4h - OR - does it register as ****.

Using Lan or Wireless Lan on any place also has serious security risks coz you never know if there is a man-in-the-middle attack.

The wireless Traffic can be secured, but then, from the Access Point to WAN you never know if the Owner of the Bar/Club/Hotel or whatever simple protocols everything thats going out.

So i would advice to use Lan/Wlan only with companys that be trustworthy and also use banking or other security things only if you really need it.

If you are back home first thing is changing Passwords.

A Keystroke logger records the keystrokes, not the symbols displayed on the screen.

 

I would rather worry using a Banking Program in an Internet Cafe, lots of these little bugger applications can hide themselves pretty well, and you usually don't have the means to detect them.

 

I have a Bank account in the UK (Jersey), where they ask me the numbers of some of my passphrases, too. But I have to admit that 3 out of the 5 magic words they use are personal details like date or city of birth, and the other two are also not so hard to guess by someone who has some information about my person ad history, so I still decline to use this on a PC I have no full control.

 

About Free Internet in Pattaya, my bar Lennie's in Soi Diamond has free Wireless Internet for customers as well as a PC for the use of the guests ..... Welcome!

 

And yes, we have a reasonable fast (1024/512) DSL connection, although sometimes blocked by my music or DVD DLs ..... But once I#m around, I#m happy to pause my downloads ....

My Nationwide banking, uses a 'down down menu'. Do the 'keystroke logger' prgrams work in this respect?

There is an internet shop right near the entrance of the Sunshine Hotel on Soi 8. I went there last year and was able to connect my laptop with no problems(they have a table just for laptops). The connection was pretty fast.

If any one is really worried about keyloggers do this:

 

Open a word processing program and type in a bunch of garbage with pieces of your password mixed in. Then cut and paste them into the password entry box in sections. Don't forget to delet the clipboard info when you are done.

Psychodad: Altough not impossible to log the data from the AP, you would gain nothing at all, as Internet Banking is based on Encryption.

So you have the (hopefully WPA, not WEP) encryption from the Notebook to the AP (which by itself is reasonably safe against local third party attacks) and then the https part ...... Don't see the possibility to break this chain from the shopowner's desk.

Its easy as a man-in-the-middle to use wrong ssl or ssh keys when the user connetcs to his bank.

After that, the man-in-the-middle can read everything unencrypted.

You would not even have to be a computer expert for that to make this attack.

If the router is yours, its simple.

 

But its not the right forum or thread to discuss this. Everything who want to know more, simply google for it.

 

All i want to say is that if you do bank transactions in an internet cafe or wifi spot, be warned, only do it if you really have to do it.
