First time in Thailand

Hi, I'm planning on traveling to Thailand in Feb. I'll spend a few days in Bangkok and about a week or more in Pattaya. Are there any safety concerns for a single guy in Thailand, besides having too much fun ?

Only safety concerns are the same in any city in the world. If you are drunk on your butt you are a target to get mugged. The Thai's believe in saving face so you should not get in an argument with them. Smiles go a long way there. And do not fight with a Thai. Even if he is smaller and you can kick his butt you will probably have every other Thai in the area to fight, this is whether you are in the right or not.

Watch out for the Katoey pickpockets in Bangkok. On my first trip to Thailand, I hadn't been there more than 1/2 hour screwing around before some Katoey near Nana Plazza had his hand in my front pocket trying to extract 2000 baht.

I stay at hotels that have in room safe. I lock up all my valuables before I leave. I carry only enough money for the night and I leave my ATM card in the safe. When I get back with my BG, I have her take a shower first. I leave out the money to pay her and lock everything in the safe.

 

In BKK check out www.majesticsuites.com great hotel, good location in the middle of all the action. In room safe.

Lots of good advice for a 1st-timer here already. Maybe the most important is what you'll hear over and over again: don't get too drunk and don't behave like a complete ass. There are already enough assholes in the world; no need to add to the population.

The Thai's believe in saving face so you should not get in an argument with them.  Smiles go a long way there.  And do not fight with a Thai.  Even if he is smaller and you can kick his butt you will probably have every other Thai in the area to fight, this is whether you are in the right or not.

This is IMO the best bit of advice for anyone coming here for the first time.

 

Dont mess with the locals or the police plain and simple. This is their country after all and I think quite rightly expect us as visitors to respect that.

 

Two quick stories....

 

Saw a very naughty fight Soi 8 on Boxing Day (how apt) Some farrang thought he was up for a one on one with a Thai boy in less than 5 seconds there must of been 30 Thai's throwing bar stools at him. The boy must of had a serious headache the when he came round.

 

I made the mistake (?) of getting involved with a Thai/Thai fight stopping a Thai guy smash a Thai girl to pieces again Soi 8 about 7am. Could not sit there and do nothing so stopped it as diplomatically as I could and in such a way that the guy did not loose face by a farrang step in. That said it did not stop him walking back up Soi 8 a meat cleaver 10 minutes later. He was ok with me BUT if you can avoid getting involved do so.

 

You will never win a fight with a Thai. But a smile goes a long way with Thai people and in the 2 years I have been here I have yet to have anything close to a fight with a Thai.

 

Also and this really is a big one leave the drugs alone here. The beer, sun and amazing company offered by the ladies should be enough. If you expect to come here and get hooked up with gear expect to be spending a lot longer than anticipated its just not worth it.

 

Thailand is a lot safer than some of its neighbors as long as you dont forget lessons learnt at home you will I promise have the most amazing time in a truly beautiful country.

Most girls will happily wriggle on a guy’s knee for a couple of drinks. It would be rude not to touch. Good boys might get a feel of her knockers too. However, she will probably draw the line at a gynaecological examination. You think that the cheeky minx is just paying hard to get. Hold her down. See how many fingers you can get in.

 

When she is doing her floor show, shove your beer bottle under her crotch as she does the splits. As her mates carry her off, get up and perform an obscene show of your own. The sight of your flabby white arse might not impress onlookers but it could catch the attention of your fellow inmates in the police cell. Tonight you will get fucked for free.

Advice for someone visiting Thailand for the first time? A lot of good advice given above.

 

Don't get so drunk you don't know what you're doing.

Look both ways before crossing the road - ESPECIALLY if the road's meant to be one way.

Smile at all times

Watch out for the katoeys (ladyboys). Some are hard to distinguish from the real thing.

And finally and perhaps most important - Have fun!

 

And on your way home, start planning your next trip.

The question of safety continues when the newbie enters his hotel room with a stranger he plans on sleeping with for the night. The ability to lock up ones valuables in a safe in your room holds many advantages. Not all hotels have in room safes. I have stayed at both hotels, I suggested and IMHO they are good value for the money. Many others have stayed at the same hotels and agree with me.

 

 

Remember what your Mom told you, look both ways many times before you cross the street.

Crossing a busy street is something that you will find a challenge. You have to look the opposite ways, not what you're use to. Believe me, this is very important for your safety.

 

No need to carry more than 5,000 Baht, as that's enough to go around. Please don't try to look like Mr. T and wear all your gold. It can be easily taken from you at anytime, leave that stuff at home.

 

Forget renting any type of transportation, as you won't need it and you are not use to that side of the road.

 

Safe sex is a practice, not an issue to joke about.

 

Use a safety deposit box, it's for your peace of mind, as well as protection for your valuables.

 

Stay away from Gold Shops, unless you plan to purchase items for yourself. The TG's can get there own gold, no reason for you to buy them anything.

 

The food can throw your system off, be careful what you eat..

 

Most of all remember that you are a tourist to a foreign country, what you believe and practice at home, may not be the case in Thailand. Show respect for religion and the King

actually you need to look left right and up - recently people are falling from BTS stations a lot. Happened 3 times in 3 weeks...

 

excellent advise given here already but one thing i want to add:

 

be aware about the passport issue - you are required to carry your original passport on you at all times and can (i say can - but it does not mean you necessarly will) get into trouble if you can not produce it when asked by an immigration or police officer. Since I was away for almost 3 months I don't know if currently there are still passport checks in Bangkok - but there sure have been in the past as you will be able to read in older threads on this board..

Cyber pointed out a very good advice, one thing I do is make a copy of my passport and bring that with me. I lock all my valuables, wallet, atm/credit cards, cash/travellers checks, etc in the in room safe or safe deposit box.

Also when I get in my room, I lock what else is on me that I don't want stolen in my luggage with a combination lock, that way, there is less temptation if they do not see a phone, camera or anything of value around for that taking.

 

It is safe all over Thailand, just keep your head when you drink, always to enjoy never to get drunk.

I did see a falang by the sidewalk on walking street, could not tell whether he was drunk or knocked out. He was alone without a buddy with him. The Thai police were there quickly, with enough foreigners around him, that was what protected him, without the visual attention he may have been mugged or hurt by anyone.

The safest thing you could possibly do is cancel your plans, send me the money and I'll go for you and e-mail pics to you, so you get to be safe and see how much fun I had!.....

 

Actually, just use common sense as you would anywhere.......rememeber> IF SOMETHING SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS.............look both ways several times, before crossing any street and always wear a condom wherever you may be, even in your home country.
