Usually, but not always, when you see these "low" fares from Travelocity.com it involves a 10-12 hour layover somewhere along the journey.

Not with EVA. Their 0115 and 0130 departures arrive in plenty of time to catch the 0830 and 0900 connections to BKK. Their 1700 departure arrives in time to connect at the late flight to BKK.

Those early morning departures can be a problem if your coming in from another city to catch that flight. On my last trip I had a departure of 130 AM from SFO on SQ, only problem is that the last flight out of Sacramento got me into SFO around 9 PM. Coming back they routed me through LAX and because the early evening flight was 1 hour and 50 minutes from my scheduled landing time they said it didn't meet the 2 hours required for a valid connection so I had to wait until the last flight out of LAX, another 5 hour wait.

Also if you have to fly in from another city your going to have to pay alot more if your on another airline than if your connecting with the same airline. As an example if I fly out of Sacramento to SFO on a United flight it will only cost me around another $20.

Well my next trip (and last trip) I went with one of EVA's hot e-fares, round trip LAX-TPE-BKK 513+tax Evergreen Deluxe. Admittedly I had to arrange for flight from Dallas but that was just $125.

Worst thing I've got is a one hour layover in Taipei and a two hour layover in lax on my way home. More than acceptable to me since the going rate for cattle class at the moment is about a grand if I go all in from Big D.

Be sure you're talking the whole price though guys. The taxes really start to mount up these days.

I found a discount price on Eva's website for my flight this fall Oct -Dec range, but the prices are:

Flight $530

taxes 142

_________

total $672

That's BR0011 leaving LAX at 15:30 arriving BKK 02:05. 19 1/2 hrs out.

BR0212 leaving BKK at 12:35 arriving LAX 14:05. 16 1/2 hrs back.

I still have to shop for a MSP/left coast flight and that will be 125-200, depending on how much sitting around I'll tolerate.

So with some screwing around, I can still get to BKK for $800-875, far better than UA at $1350+ :beer

I'm still considering some alternatives through Korean Airlines through Chicago just under $1k. But that still involves two airlines and Korean always has some long waits in sunny Seoul ! 2guns

True Korean had a good fare from SFO but as the small print stated 45 dollar Fuel Surcharge each way.

Keep in mind that the lowest fare for a trip is not necessarily the cheapest in the long run. You need to factor in the FF programs of the airlines. I earn enough miles on a standard trip to qualify for 60% of another trip. Currently the airline has a promotion that will provide even more miles so it works out to 70% of another trip and on 2 trips this past spring they had an even better promotion where I earned 90% for another trip. Those of you that live on the east coast would do even better. As an example if I had to pay $1200 for a trip without a promotion going, then the effective cost would only be $750. When I paid $800 this past spring with the promotion the effective cost was only $420. Not to mention that because I stay with one airline I'm entitled to take more bags and have preferred seating.

Best I saw just today (8/11/05) from LAX to BKK was $545 I think, NOT including all the taxes.

With the tax added in, it came to over $700 USD.

0130 departure.......Taipei @0610 then on to BKK @ 0830

EVA direct website booking.

I'm one of those paying $1329 on United, but because of my miles and status, I am able to upgrade to business class so it's worth it for me. However, I think the best deal these days is Eva Evergreen deluxe. It's an extra few hundred over their basic fare, but you get a business seat, and best of all you arrive during the day. I hate arriving at 11pm on United, and racing to Nana to try and catch the last of the action.
