VOIP Phone Service

Recommended Posts

VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol)

I’ll be taking up residence in the Kingdom next month and since my apartment has broadband access, I was thinking about bringing a Vonage setup with me.

Basically this would allow me to make unlimited calls to the US over the internet and also allow friend and family in the states to call me (over the internet) via my Vonage US phone number.

I have friends that use the service in other countries (Korea and England) and it seems to work well.

My questions are; can I legally use VOIP in Thailand, is anyone currently using VOIP in the Kingdom?

TIA for your responses!

Cheers :ang2 ,

Bill

You sound like my mirror image - I lived in Tahoe off and on since the 70's (Homewood) and have been using Vonage for a couple of years now.

I have also rented a apartment starting January 25, and will install DSL immediately. I can then test my Vonage service to make and receive calls from the U.S. and Oz.

The one problem that I had bringing my Vonage to Pattaya last November, is most Hotels that have wired broadband share the DSL with other rooms, so when somebody is downloading porn, the Vonage does not have enough bandwidth to operate, and service is spotty.

About the first of February, my private DSL connection will be live and I will be able to give you a definitive answer how it works.

PM me if you want more details.

Bill

I am wondering about this as well. Would be nice to be able to set this up at home so when I am on the road I can keep in touch with the wife on a US number. Please keep up informed.

Its wheels up for me on Saturday, and I have rented an apartment in Jomtien Beach. I have been told that it takes about a week to get DSL (I have already paid for a phone line).

Then I can hook up my VOIP unit with a U.S. number and people can call me just like I was in the States.

My service also has another feature - It can ring 2 phone lines. My U.S. number, which will not answer, as it has not been hooked up, and I will add my Thai mobile number when I have bought a SIM card in Thailand.

Then, anybody can call me and I will answer in my mobile. The down side to this arrangement, is that I pay the LD charge from U.S. to Thailand, but it is only about 5 cents per minute to a Thai Cell phone - O.K. for a week or so.

I use VoIP already in Thailand. Not with US but Germany.

I bought in Germany a DSL modem which can connect to DSL stand-alone, there is no need the computer running. Further I can connect normal telefones to the modem.

I made contract with a VoIP provider in Germany so I got a local number in Germany. Everybody can call this local number in Germany and here in Thailand the telefone is ringing.

In my case everything works perfect.

I like to use Skype to talk with family back in the US crystal clear with my ADSL 512 line. Only downside is the people on the other end have to have a computer too but this is usually not a problem.

In my previous life, I helped set up a VOIP service for Oz, and I have a bit of expertise with it.

IMHO, Skype is like a ham radio - Sure you can talk with it for free, but yo have to use a mike and speaker, etc. and the protocol that use is not standard.

Most providers provide an adapter box that includes a router that also has a telephone jack. You simply plug any phone into it, and you have a normal telephone, except your phone number does not have to be where you are.

I have a Las Vegas telephone number, and when I am in Pattaya, my kids simply dial the number that they normally call me on, and it rings here. Pretty cool...

I think that this would be a good promotional tool for a bar there - Free calls home.

I'm currently living in Taiwan and just recently downloaded Skype. So far so good.

My calls home are 0.021 cents per minute to the US. They also have a program where you can buy a local number in your hometown so that family back home only make a local call to reach you. Thinking about signing up for that too.

Then again if you don't like using a headset you won't want to use Skype. Personally I love using a headset. Hands free.

Hi

Check out VoiceStick ... I do not have this service but on my last trip to LOS I did meet someone who stopped Vontage to go to VoiceStick. He was using VoiceStick at an internet cafe.

Basicly.. you use a small USB drive (size of a cig lighter) which has the software loaded on it. Just plug it into a USB and use the small headphones provided.. and you have a phone at ANY decent Internet Cafe. Great if you are traveling around Thailand and still would like to call home. He thought the sound quality was excellent. One befefit is that it is very portable to any country in the world. You do not need a special modem.

I used skype on my laptop last dec in LOS. No problems, great calls too. Worked great and I was using a wireless connection. Asso worked well in tokyo. Since they are on a different cell system voip is the only way you can call out of the country with your own phone if you are from USA. 2guns 2guns

That voicestick looks very good. Might give it a go when I run out of credit for skype.

I use Skype but also have a Skype cordless Duel phone. This means Skype calls and Landline calls are all made/received using the cordless phone from anywhere in the home. Just like using a normal telephone, except no wires!

I also have one of these phones and they are great.

A lot better than a mic and speakers or a headset.

But they are not sold on Skype website so I guess you can get them from ebay.

yeah billrussell i've been waiting to buy a ATA box for awhile..

just can't decide which one.

Pennytel is 0.04c to Thai mobiles from OZ.. pretty cheap..

will be better once the thai start getting in VOIP

The best thing about VOIP service with a ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter) is that it looks and acts like a regular phone. Your computer does not have to be turned on (Broadband must be), and you have a standard telephone handset. You pick it up and get a dial tone, and when somebody rings you, it rings...

Most also have extra services that are free, like when somebody calls you, you can set it up so 2 lines ring (Your home number and mobile for example). Also they have voice-mail that you can access from the net anywhere. You also can have several numbers. One can be in Los Angles and another can be in New York, and they would be local numbers from any phone there.

I think that this is the future of telephones.

Try This FREE calls to Land lines and Cell phones in 39 countries. only catch is you need to buy 10 Euros of credit BUT if you call anywhere in the free countries then they never deduct from your credits so In my case Calling to the US is free. I have been using for 2 weeks not a problem. Have a look. I use Skype and it is also good but not free as this is.

I assume that you still have to be connected to the internet to use the phone? I only have dial up in my condo. Broadband is available but until I've made up my mind where I really want to stay, I haven't done anything about installing it yet.

I've just signed up for Skpe so far have only made one phone call to my brother in Scotland. A good clear line though we were disconnected once. A half hour call cost me 36p.

I also use voipstunt and it is great no delays like skype and calls are free to landlines in lots of countries providing you add 10 euros to your balance.

I have not had no problems so far but still have skype as a back up.

Yup thats what I have been using and the 10 euros remain in your account as long as you call the free countrys can't beat it with a stick.

L. I think the 10 Euros are for 120 days and then they are gone.

I looked but saw no time limit on how long the balance would last can you tell mt where you got that Info Please.

I have added my history of free call and even if thats the case I would have paid less than .75 baht per min with at least 70 days to go till the balance dissappers.

still unbeatable IMO
