I guessed that the lower number of Baht to the GBP was likely to be attributable to the falling value of the GBP. However, when I checked out the link that Scumbag posted and looked at the value of the Baht relative to other currencies, it was the same picture - even against the Yen. It is the Baht rising strongly which is the cause.

Anyone know what is happening for the Baht to rise in this way? Will the election make any difference?

Yes you are right....the pound has been pretty syable against the USD/EURO.its definately a rise in the Baht.

Could be a concern, wouldnt like it to go back to its value back on my first visit..1988,when a Pound got u slightly under 40B :beer .That might really scupper my retirement plan for later this year. :nod

Thaksin's planning on doing a bunk to some other country so he's talking the value of the baht up so he'll get more foreign currency for his billions of baht. :nod

Hi,

I know it's not scientific, but the baht seems to strenghten in high season and weaken in low season. :D With election coming and uncertainty in the air I'd say the currency will weaken. It's a gamble but getting up in the morning is a gamble.

Hi

Mine is the same as the link Mescalito added. XE.com is (probably) the most widely used online converter as it is real time (updates every 2 minutes I think).

My own version has the Baht at the top of the lists so its (a little) easier to use.

It would be really nice for me if you use it as it improves my web-traffic - thanks

Down to 66.33 for bank notes today 67.05 for TC,s goodness knows how much farther it can drop, hope we are not heading back to the bad days of 10 years ago (40 bt to the pound) that would price most of us out of the market for sure :clap2

To add to what wacmedia said, I don't think there is any rhyme or reason to currency fluctuations. I have been following exchange rates for over 20 years and I still can't say for certain what makes a particular currency stronger or weaker. Every time I have a theory it gets proven wrong. All I know is that I usually end up on the wrong side of the slide whenever I convert money.

My favorite line about currency exchange is that every time you change money someone makes a profit, and it ain't you.

I am heading to Pattaya in July for a month, before I visit Thailand I usually get about £200 worth of baht from an internet exchange company (got 74, last year) just to tick me over for the first few days. But at the minute the exchange rate is about 64. Should I just wait and exchange some sterling in BKK airport or bring travellers cheques?

Cheers everyone

Definately travellers cheques.

My bank Barclays dont charge for them if i get just a little cash from them.If you go this route get the largest denominations possible as there is an exchange charge of around 40B per cheque. This however is more than made up for by the better exchange rate.

Also its much safer with cheques than large amounts of cash. :allright

I remembered 1US$ was getting 25 baht, now it still good at 37 baht to the dollars. Prices hasn't gone up that much since Thailand decided to float their bhat.

We should enjoy this while it last. Thai bhat will strengthen and Farang currencies will weaken. Thai economy is getting stronger and stronger and the prices WILL get more expensive in the near future.

Maybe not a bad thing, force all the Lager Louts back to Spain

Whilst I understand the sentiment, regrettably I do not think it would drive the lager louts back to Spain. Although they seem to only share a brain cell, they are still likely to be able to figure that LOS provides a more economical option than Europe. Drat.

Firslty PLEASE no-one take offence at this post it is meant to be amusing and by no means to imply its typical.

Regarding the "lager louts" - I remember seeing a rather fetching anecdote on another board (shortly after they found the little pygmy man relics in SEA) which went along the lines of:-

"Anthropologists were excited recently at the discovery of what they believe to be the real "missing link". Named "pattayaman it was evidently shaven headed highly covered in body art and there was evidence that its knuckles scraped the ground when it walked (barely upright).

Amusing yes - sadly sometimes true - it has been spotted with alarming frequence over the last few years.

A low class tourist destination attracts low class tourists.

Always exceptions to the rule of course :clueless :banghead
