Hi all

everyone says that Areca Lodge is a great place to stay but nearly everyone who recommends Areca goes onto say that 2nd Road is a bitch......

Is it really that bad??? Isn't there pedestrian crossings etc??????

thanks

Rowan

They have pedestrian crossings marked but they mean absoulutely nothing. You cross the road at your own risk. In the daytime there is heavy traffic but you can see it coming and they can see you so it is not that difficult to cross in between the vehicles. At night I think it gets more hairy because of the darkness and they cannot see you as easily. Add to that some alcohol and it can make for a tough crossing. Usually wth a TG holding your hand you can make it. :chogdee2

You have to be able to run -- and, quick starts and quick stops too. It's an experience to say the least. From mid-day to mid-night it is a bitch -- and that is any time of year, high season or low season, it does not matter. If negotiating traffic is a problem for you, then stay at one of the great hotels on Soi 13. Otherwise the Areca is a great hotel and great location -- with more and more activity being developed in the Soi Bukarao area.

If one uses a bit of common sense and looks both ways many times crossing 2nd Road is not all that bad. Certainly not as bad as the above comments make it out to be.

I agree with BigD,i always stay at Areca, and 2nd road is busy, but not a problem,

If youre in a wheel chair or on crutches, forget it.

The pedestrian crossing as anywhere in Thailand, means fuck all.

Mate your coming to the biggest Male playground in the world.the last thing you want to worry about is crossing a road..

maxpower1971 Most of these guys are having you on. Its can be a busy road.

and like all busy roads use caution when you cross it.

I have survived the crossing for years now, and sometimes on my wandering back to the areca late at night blind drunk I have crossed the road.

The corner of walking street and south road between 7-8pm is worst.

Many people stay at the Areca , love it and are not bothered by crossing second rd. It it certainly not a 'bitch" to cross, but it can be inconvenient at times depending on how many times you have to cross. All the crosswalk does is show the bahtbus drivers you don't need to be picked up and they just wizz by. Nobody stops for pedestrians which is a general rule in all of Pattaya.

As mentioned above, if you're concerned just stay at one of the nearby hotels on Soi 13.....Lek, Dynasty , Sandy Springs.... All good places and easier access to beach road.

As a guy who will never see 60 again, dont sweat it unless you are crippled. I stayed at the Lek last time and was over and back 5 or 6 times a day (have to eat at Kiss!) Its not an issue if you just take your time.

It's a busy road and I was expecting chaos when I first went, but it really isnt that bad. Crossing it to jump onto a baht bus or just to get over to Mikes really wasnt an issue.

My main concern was crossing it in the massive downpour that flooded Soi Dianna last October.

you can always go the other way to soi bukalouw[sp] and take the bahtbus. one way is to south pattaya road the other way to central pattaya road, there are not so many

BBs as on second road and you have a short walk at either end.

And you get to see another part of pattaya.

I agree. It is a lot less walking than having to cross 2nd road and cut through the shopping mall to get a baht bus to Walking Street. Interesting ride as well as you get to see a little more of the poorer side of Pattaya on the way.
