Is it better to bring $US or $Canadian money/travelers checques?

I also read somewhere to bring large denominations as you get a better rate?

You can probably cash either type at any bank. If you think the dollar is going to tank further, you might think about the Canadian travelers checks.

You are talking about rural branches of banks on the other side of the world from North America. How much do you think they value Canadian dollars? Think carefully before maxxing yourself out with anything but US dollars, UK pounds or euro.

No. Of course he would need to exchange.

And of course, it doesn't matter what type of currency he brings.

He will get the best rate on the larger bills.

Fair enough, everyone needs an obsession, heh.

 

They both go up and down, in the world and against each other. I've never grasped how people are proud of their currency anyhow, it's like being proud of your ancestors to me. Like you, I'd sell my countries' currency in a flash to make a penny. When I carry, it's usually US dollars simply because they change the easiest. A long time ago I used to carry little bits of gold when I went up-country for the same reason.

 

Money is just for counting. The best deal I can get, that's the one I'll take. I'm not anti-nationalist, but on currencies, yeah I am.

Cannot agree with this as in my experience most Western currencies are very easy to exchange at all sites,even my Kiwi mickey mouse notes!Suggest O.P. just brings whatever currency he has on hand!

US Dollar bills get a better rate with 100 notes, less for 20's and even less for 1' to 10's. Travellers checks have a fee of 33 baht per check to cash which lowers the rate you get that is higher than bills and I don't believe it matters what denomination. I would always take the largest denomination that you can get so you pay the 33 baht (plus another small fee I think) on a larger amount therby taking advantage of the spread between bills and traverllers checks. It works to just a wash. The Canadian dollar bills seems to get the same rate no matter what denomination you cash as far as I can see. The main reason to be one or the other is depending on what you home currency is. If you arre Canadian or American bring you own currency or the home bank will get it's pound of flesh on the currency exchange.

Whatever currency you take, make sure the bills are in excellent shape - no torn off corners, handwriting on the bills, etc. - or they will be refused. Before I leave on vacation, I go to my local bank and withdraw a few hundred dollars worth of $100 bills, and let the teller know I need good bills and why, and it is never a problem. When I've used up this amount of money, I just go to the ATM's. I haven't bothered with TC's for years. As for denominations, I have been able to cash $20 CDN bills in Thailand without problem, but have never tried anything smaller.

I agree with Snowbird. Keep some cash in reserve for emergencies and use ATM machines. Why bother carrying all that cash of TCs around? Today's technology makes it a waste of time and a security risk.
