Basil on the Member's Bar posted these questions:

May be time for bar, restaurant, guest house, hotel owners and managers to review there site safety.

Do you:

• Have/need, a fire alarm and test it regularly?

• Have enough emergency exits?

• Emergency exits are never obstructed, never chained up during trading hours and clearly indicated?

• Have enough emergency lighting and test it regularly?

• Have an effective plan of action; make sure all staff know what to do, where the exits are, etc?

• Induct new staff with safety and evacuation procedures?

• Have enough fire fighting equipment, train staff to us it, and check it regularly?

• Have strict rules on what may not be brought on to your premises, i.e. fire works, inflammable liquids, gas canisters, etc?

• Review materials used in construction, furnishings, decorations for flammability, toxicity, etc?

• Review all the above frequently???

All excellent questions. OK boys let's hear it. What would happen if a fire occurred in your gaff? Have you taken sufficient steps to prevent it?

I always look for ways out. Habit.

I remember being in Lucifer's. Jam packed.

Looked for 'ways out'. Many, many would not make it out in the ev ent of fire/smoke.

By law now venues over a certain sized have to be surveyed and cleared to enable them to obtain the new licenses, Blues Factory was done last January by a company from BKK, the the check up they include fire safety, exits, emergency lights, signs and fire extinguishers also you have to have a basic plan of who's in charge of what in event of a fire, the guy went through it and handed a list of what had to be done. We were cleared again 2 weeks ago for this year. Although its nice to be deemed "safe" I still wouldn't want to try that theory out.

From what I hear a couple of other businesses on WS are being looked at, one I know is having trouble getting a new licenses.

Personally I think after what happened on Wednesday they are going to get stronger on this (and so they should) and I reckon the fire exit (or lack of problem) will be a big issue.

Dave,

Thanks for being the first to reply and for once it's nice to see someone complying with the rules rather than expending their energy trying to find a way around them.

We didn't have a choice too be honest, last year it cost us 50k to get the survey complete then it cost extra to buy in the signs, fit the fire bells etc, we were one of the first to do it last year and it was sprung on us a bit but i do know for a fact that if we hadn't of had it done we would NOT have an operating license.

The issue of the demolition of all the premises on the sea side of walking st arises every now and then in the media and then falls away again.

I think that this story will come up again very shortly. The parties that want it knocked, now will have the political will and backing to push ahead with this plan

Davethailand, copy what Cheshire Tom said, thanks for your reply. I'm glad to hear you're doing the right thing, and that a few others might have to as well.

Think I'll stop by for a wee tipple a couple weeks from now, when I get back to P-ville.

As many board members know I've had more then a few tussles with Tom but I agree 100% on fire safety.

Then don't repeatedly recommend hostels that are are notoriously weak in that area.

Do you have a back exit, I don't recall seeing one but then again I never looked closely for one.

Afraid not.

we do however have a side exit :clueless which is next to the bar and opens onto the alley way between us and Marine seafood, its not padlocked but it does have 2 deadbolts locking it BUT they are easily opened (only from inside) and no key is needed.

The only hazard is if the idiots parking bikes and selling food block the door but there are signs etc asking for it to be kept clear.

That's good to hear that no key is needed as I remember about 10 Thais lost their lives when Route 999 went up in flames a couple years back and the back exit was locked. Did anyone get into trouble with the authorities over that incident?

Hah....slim chance and no chance! I was in a WS GO-GO recently and was surprised to see it actually did have an emergency exit. Mind you they had decided it was a good place to put the slot machine the girls like to play! Edited by jacko

Lucifers is a death trap.

In 2005 there was a stampede when the nightclub was raided by the police. The staff in charge cut the music but unfortunately also the air conditioning. It got hot really quickly and word spread that there was a fire.

Many people were injured from being trampled in the rush to get out.

Ironically, many people who found one of the fire exits were crushed as the gate outside to Walking Street had been padlocked for security reasons!
