I use it all the time for work and personal use.

I have it used it at home (USA). I asked a friend here who lives up in Udon to download it so we can talk and he backed away because of security issues he's afraid of.

 

Since arriving here, when I try to call a number back home, a "Microsoft encountered an error", and two options "Send" and "Don't send". In the past, whenever I got those I would just choose the "Don't send".

 

Any other VOIP's that are comparable?

I used Skype every day on my last trip, usually at a Internet shop on Soi Lenke. Never had a problem connecting with cell phones in the USA. I found some shops that would not allow Skype, but they always had a phone booth they wanted me to use at a much higher cost per minute (sometimes 10 times the cost of Skype). I passed on them and found another. I was in Mexico recently and had difficulty with the connection and quality of the voice. It was the poor connection at the place I was staying.

I use Skype all the time to call UK landlines. It's generally pretty good if you have a decent connection.

No issues, no security concerns. Works fine if you have a decent internet connection.

No problem apart from the internet connection speed, which may cause PC to PC video call to drop the video but audio still works fine, although there are some wow and flutter as connection to Brazil is pretty rotten at both ends.

I use it almost daily to communicate with my clients in America. Every once in a while I get a bad connection, but most of the time its great.

My friend who backed out on wanting to download Skype, had this to say to me " I'm a bit afraid of their security and the fact that they can access all your computer files once you download their software, No one can listen in except Skype and they can also see everything on your computer."

That's his personal problem, nothing to do with Skype. There are no security issues with Skype or with using Skype in Thailand. None. Skype is a telephone. The only security issues are what you might say and others might hear you saying. Even then, to be frank, it sounds like your friend has an awfully big head to think they'd be concerned about him. The people they're concerned with, they're, er, "assisting authorities" with inquiries at this time.

 

AND there is nothing Thai about Skype itself. If you're worried that Skype will steal your information.... what the hell are you doing using open commo on your super-secret CIA contract assassination black-bag job anyhow?

You have a Windows problem. Microsoft doesn't help the Thai censors, not that way anyhow. You should turn it off entirely anyhow. Instructions here.

Well, it might or might not surprise you, but every piece of kit you install on your computer might be unsafe, be it messenger, emule and the list goes on and on.

Why do you think there are a shitload of updates waiting for you when you start your computer? Because the OS is full of vulnerabilities.

 

The wiki article discusses vulnerabilities in Skype, but it seems to me the article is outdated, with newer versions the issues seem to be resolved.

The second article is about the encryption used, and the US don't want that, because they're a bunch os nosey cunts, do you think anything sent over the internet is private? Think again, virtually everything sent over the internet, phone line, GSM is being logged/monitored, so unless you are planning some serious terrorist attack, you should be fine.

 

Satellites are far more advanced than we could ever imagine.

 

Big brother is not fiction any more, but reality, although in a place like Udon Thani you should still be pretty safe.

I used Skype for the time in lived in Jomtien w/o any issues.Get the Skype US pkg for peanuts per month for unlimited calls Skype Out to US/Canada.I had hardwire conx.

And therein lies the problem. For me Skype presents an exercise in frustration.

Skype out only really works on 3G agreed but you can use the chat function okay in Patts on 2G.

I use it daily from the US to talk with the GF back in Thailand, and since we both have web cams on our laptops we make video calls with Skype. The only problem we ever have is the result of her connecting to the 'net via a wireless aircard as opposed to a cable or DSL connection; the calls drop sometimes. I use it when I'm there, too, to call back to the US and have found it to work very well.
