So... As a kid I always had a little piggy bank - one of those old school ceramic ones that took forever to get anything out of it without breaking it... you remember the type, the ones where you had to poke a butter knife up thru the slit to get the money out (or break it).

 

I remember always putting my change in that little bank and emptying it when no more would fit.. was a good time as I remember.

 

Turns out that its not just a little kid thing.

 

I have been here now for going on 3 years, and as my old habits tend to stick with me, I always put my small money in a sock drawer here and forget about it. Since moving here I have never left the house with loose change in my pockets - all of it would end up in the drawer (or on my desk, but then when I get around to cleaning that it goes in the drawer). The extra 20s and 50s would go in as well, but I would occasionally use those, so there were not that many.

 

Tonight Fern decided she wanted to take all that change to the bank with her in the AM (shes working at a bank now), and started counting. That was 6 hours ago, and shes just now almost finished. I tried taking the sock drawer out of the chest to carry it over to where she was "working" on the couch, but I couldn't lift it lol.

 

Also it turns out that the bank will only accept coins in 100 coin sets separated by plastic bag (or wrapped in coin wrappers which we do not have). We ran out of bags hours ago, so she cut up old rain parkas in to squares and used those lol. I feel like a hick =P

 

Grand total: 28,479.25 baht.

 

Not sure how much it weighs... but quite a bit. Filled a sock drawer (14" X 10 deep x 18") 3/4 of the way to the top.

 

Moral of the story: Throw your change in a drawer - makes a nice surprise when you have someone else add it up for ya at the end of the year (and keeps her busy for a few hours lol)

Periodically I pull all the quarters out and put them in rolls which are worth about 300 bhat each. If I am really bored I will roll some dimes and nickles also. Can't be bothered with pennies though. I have milk jugs full of them in the garage.

 

Some of the stores here have automated counters, but they steal 6% of what they count.

I have a change jar at home and I take it to my local bank where they count it every three months. I get around $100USD.

Congratulations. I do the same thing here at home. I used to save it and then cash it all in before a trip to LOS or else ware. My personal record is $2800usd. I didn’t realize how much it was till I counted it. I don’t do this anymore since moving to a down town apartment and realizing it’s probably not a good idea to have this much cash in the house, change or not. I’m a bartender and our prices are to the nearest quarter so I go home every night with a pocket full of quarters and throw them in a jar.

If you have over $500 of quarters you can get merchant bags from the bank. It’s a lot faster than rolling them. I have one of those little counter tube sets, $4 on ebay . Just measure them out and dump into the bag rather than counting and rolling. The automated things are 8.9% here, F-that.

i always did that but went to a bailiffs auction and bought a fruit machine, what a great way of saving, my friends come round, have a beer and fill it up, it looks great aswell

My mom always kept her spare change in a big jar. We had always assumed she cashed the change in when the jar got full. after she passed away, we discovered she had been dumping it in an ornamental chest. The change was worth about $1,200.

I used to do the same. Now before I leave I grab it and go down to the phone machine. I am able to put a couple hundred baht on my phone that will be there waiting for me next time I get in town.

That would be a good use for it... Except that I get billed for my phone now, since I have unlimited internet :/

i keep a 3litre vodka bottle in my room for putting change in, my best ever take was 800 euro but now i count it every 6 months or so just before each trip and usually get around 200 euro from it
